The Coast live oak (Tongva: we’aashar) is known for its inspiring strength, not solely embodied in physical stature or impressive age. Strength is also revealed in the ways that a living being supports the other life in its environment.

This amazing oak is a keystone species, meaning it helps hold the biodiversity of entire ecologies together. Hundreds of species of birds, caterpillars and butterflies, bees, wasps, and amphibians rely upon it for nesting, habitat and food. Over 22% of land mammals in southern California are known to use oak acorns as a food source (acorns are rich in fat, protein and carbohydrates). The fungi that coast live oak’s extensive root systems support can improve soil health and support other nearby plants.

We’aashar has long supported humans as part of its environment, generously providing sustenance, medicine, wood, shade and shelter.

It is known as live oak because its branches have leaves year-round (it produces young leaves simultaneously to the shedding of dead leaves). Leathery and notably cup-shaped with dense tufts of hairs on their lower surfaces, the highly photosynthetic leaves on the outer tree canopy experience exposure to intense sunlight, and collect dew and mist. This high moisture content allows them to survive for years with limited rainfall and equips them with resistance to flammability in the face of the flying embers of fire; pair that with the dense canopy that serves to catch such embers, and coast live oaks play an essential role in fire resiliency. The inner canopy leaves are longer and flatter and depend upon capturing reflected and scattered light from the outer canopy for photosynthesis.

🙏🙏We were able to save native seeds and a few native plants from the fire🙏🙏 Greener Empowerment Foundation is committed to our mission toward reducing our and actively being in instead.

💔The Western population of the monarch butterfly has declined to a near-record low with fewer than 10,000 found living in California this winter.💔

"The recent Los Angeles-area wildfires damaged tree groves where these butterflies live, including a habitat site in Lower Topanga Canyon where more than 100 butterflies were recorded in last year’s count, she said.

Another alarming finding was made at a site in Santa Barbara County, which went from recording 33,200 monarchs last winter to only 198 this year.

An annual count recorded 9,119 butterflies this winter, according to results released by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. This is the second-lowest population recorded since tracking began in 1997. An all-time low of fewer than 2,000 monarchs was recorded in 2020."
