We are seeking help from the Tooele community, to get volunteers & donations in support of the 6th Annual Back To School Community Closet. The purpose of the event is to provide gently used clothing, school supplies and hygiene products to children in families that self-identify as needing a little extra help at the start of the school year. Last year, we added free haircuts to the services offered, and this year the Eyecare Foundation for Kids and local doctors will provide eye exams and lenses to uninsured children. Initially serving about 130 children, the annual event has grown exponentially to allow us to assist over 628 children in 225 households last year. Children are invited to “shop” the clothing racks, and find outfits that make them look and feel their best as they head back to school. School supplies are distributed according to availability and age appropriateness, and we try to send home all the hygiene supplies needed for the entire family. Attendees are invited to return the last hour of the event to take as much additional clothing as they need, and any items left over are distributed back to the local churches, shelters and non-profit partner agencies.
This success of this event relies 100% on local donations and volunteers. It is truly a community endeavor. I must admit that as the participation grows, I get really nervous every year that we will not be able to serve all of the excited children that line up to take part. Please help us to make sure that we don't have any children that leave disappointed! You can assist by getting the word out to your congregations, neighbors, co-workers and associates. Donations can be dropped off at the Tooele WalMart between Saturday July 20th & August 14th.
Volunteers are needed to set-up, staff the event, and break it down. If anybody is interested in volunteering, call or text me at 435-830-7953 or let me know via facebook!
