We are still desperately in need of volunteer help to sort through the generous donations of clothing we have piled at Northlake Elementary for our Back To School Closet. The event starts this morning at 11am (Thursday 8/15), but as you can see we have a LOT of clothing we have not got out in the racks yet! If you are available to help, just come on down to the school at 268 North Coleman. Volunteers come through the front door or north dock entrance. We will start sorting again at 9am!

We are seeking help from the Tooele community, to get volunteers & donations in support of the 6th Annual Back To School Community Closet. The purpose of the event is to provide gently used clothing, school supplies and hygiene products to children in families that self-identify as needing a little extra help at the start of the school year. Last year, we added free haircuts to the services offered, and this year the Eyecare Foundation for Kids and local doctors will provide eye exams and lenses to uninsured children. Initially serving about 130 children, the annual event has grown exponentially to allow us to assist over 628 children in 225 households last year. Children are invited to “shop” the clothing racks, and find outfits that make them look and feel their best as they head back to school. School supplies are distributed according to availability and age appropriateness, and we try to send home all the hygiene supplies needed for the entire family. Attendees are invited to return the last hour of the event to take as much additional clothing as they need, and any items left over are distributed back to the local churches, shelters and non-profit partner agencies.

This success of this event relies 100% on local donations and volunteers. It is truly a community endeavor. I must admit that as the participation grows, I get really nervous every year that we will not be able to serve all of the excited children that line up to take part. Please help us to make sure that we don't have any children that leave disappointed! You can assist by getting the word out to your congregations, neighbors, co-workers and associates. Donations can be dropped off at the Tooele WalMart between Saturday July 20th & August 14th.

Volunteers are needed to set-up, staff the event, and break it down. If anybody is interested in volunteering, call or text me at 435-830-7953 or let me know via facebook!

Two of the wonderful and beautiful people that work at Relief Services (That asked to remain anonymous). A very small few are paid staff, but most of the workers are volunteers that give their time freely to serving our community.

Tooele Transitional Housing is looking for 3 adult bikes - we have individuals who have recently become locally employed that need transportation. Please let us know if you have a used bike in good condition. We also are on the lookout for bike locks.

This is our "celebration" board. We don't catch everything during the week, but anytime a case manager passes the board with a success on her mind & dry erase marker nearby - we try to share the excitement with the rest of the team. Friday at staff meetings I get the opportunity to get the full scoop. Updates this week included "GB" who maintained housing with the help of a little rent assistance (grant funded) at the onset of a new job after a period of unemployment. A week into the job and he has been given additional responsibilities, and reports the family is doing well. We actually had 6 clients that celebrated new jobs or promising interviews, 5 received outfits from our professional clothing closet so that they were dressed sharp for interviews, 2 more households found affordable housing, and 1 maintained housing through landlord mediation. 3 more families have moved out of our transitional housing facility in the past couple weeks into permanent housing! (2 of which were due to recently obtained employment) Subsequently, a family that had been split up due to homelessness was able to be reunited with their children in one apartment at our transitional housing facility - and both parents have since found temporary employment. Collaboration with our County jail has improved discharge planning efforts - with planning and communication we are trying to avoid releasing individuals into homelessness. Landlords that are willing to work with us and case managers that go the extra mile have resulted in several "happy dances" this past week. In all, 114 unduplicated families have received services at Relief Services since March 1st - so although a week's worth of recap does not cover it all, it highlights some of the reasons our team shows up every day. :)
