Attached you will find the new completed Kay County 4-H Handbook, which becomes effective September 21, 2026, following the Kay County Free Fair.
Please note that because the handbook and enrollment period begin on September 1, 4-H member enrollment status for participation in the Kay County Free Fair in October will be carried over from the previous 4-H year. This exception applies only to the Free Fair. After the Free Fair, all members must meet the current enrollment requirements outlined in the new handbook.
Please review the handbook and let me know if you have any questions or suggestion by September 4.

🥾🌿 4-H Outdoor Club is TOMORROW! 🌿🥾

We’ll meet at the Lake Ponca Bike/Hiking Trails below Wentz Pool at 9:00 AM and get ready for a fun morning outdoors!

Before we head out, Payton & Cole and Paisley & Alexis have two short demonstrations to share with us, and then we’ll hit the trail! 🍀

We’ll be hiking approximately 1.5 miles at a nice, leisurely pace with plenty of stops along the way to explore, look for animal activity, identify birds, insects, tracks, plants, and anything else we discover.

Please bring:

💧 A water bottle — we’ll have extra water too!

👟 Closed-toe, sturdy shoes

🎒 A small backpack if you have one — don’t stress if you don’t! 😉

🧢 A hat and sunscreen are a good idea

🦟 Bug spray if you prefer your own

🔭 If you have binoculars, bring those too!

Shorts will be perfectly fine!

We’ll have snacks for everyone, plus guides, magnifying glasses, and some other fun exploring supplies.

Most of all, come ready to hike, explore, learn, and enjoy the outdoors together! We’ll also be practicing Leave No Trace and picking up a little trash along the way to leave the trail better than we found it. 💚

Calling all bakers !!!!

Showcase your talents in the fair !!!

1. Presentation & Packaging
Plating: All baked goods must be placed on a clean, disposable paper or foam plate.
Sealing: Breads, rolls, and biscuits must be enclosed inside a clean, transparent, sealable plastic bag to protect them from dust and handling.
Portion Size: Depending on the exact class, entries usually call for either a one-half loaf of yeast/quick bread or a specific count for smaller items (such as 3 rolls, biscuits, or muffins). (Note: Superintendents generally display only a slice or sample portion for judging and dispose of the rest.)
2. Ingredient & Scratch Requirements
From Scratch: For most standard 4-H food classes, entries must be made entirely from scratch. Commercial mixes or pre-made doughs are typically not permitted unless explicitly specified (such as in designated "semi-homemade" or decorated cake classes).
Bread Machines: Bread machines are often allowed for yeast breads, but the ingredients themselves must still be measured and combined from scratch (no boxed bread machine mixes).
Prohibited Ingredients: Due to food safety and lack of refrigeration at fairgrounds, any fillings, frostings, or glazes containing raw eggs, heavy cream, unbaked cream cheese, custard, or perishable items that require refrigeration will result in immediate disqualification.
3. Documentation & Recipes
Recipe Copy: A complete copy of the recipe must accompany the exhibit.
Anonymity (if applicable): Some contests require that the participant's name not appear on the recipe card itself, or that contact info be taped securely to the bottom/underside of the plate rather than the visible top, to keep judging impartial.
Cultural or Special Stories: If entering specialized classes (such as breads from another culture), a 1-page report or story detailing the bread's background, cultural significance, and nutritional contribution is often required alongside the physical loaf.

Do you love building with LEGOs? Take your skills from the playroom to the fairgrounds! The Oklahoma State 4-H Fairbook offers categories for members to showcase their engineering and architectural skills using plastic building bricks.

Don't Just Build—Engineer!

Under the Oklahoma State 4-H Fair woodworking projects are categorized by grade level and specific skill sets.
The core judging focuses on sawing, sanding, planning, joint alignment, neat fastener use (nails/screws), and careful finishing. Projects must be proportional, functional, and permanently signed and dated in an inconspicuous location.

The official fairbook project classes broken down by level include:
1. General & Carving Classes (All Grades)
* Wood Carving Article: Junior (Grades 3–7) or Senior (Grades 8–12).
* Woodcraft – Original Design: Junior or Senior custom-designed items that do not fit standard pre-made plans.
2. Beginning Level (Grades 3–5)
* Wall-Mounted Rack: Hot pad holder, tie rack, or paper towel holder.
* Puzzles or Games: Hand-cut wooden jigsaw puzzles, brain teasers, or board games.
* Shelves: Spice rack, what-not shelf, or other small wall/desk shelves.
* Book Ends: Simple paired designs highlighting squaring and sanding skills.
* Miscellaneous: Small beginner-appropriate items.
3. Intermediate Level (Grades 6–8)
* Bookcase or Entertainment Center: Built without doors.
* Utility Racks: Racks specifically designed for guns, baseball bats, or fishing rods.
* Refinished Item: Restoring an older wooden piece (Note: Must include a "before" picture, a cost sheet, a history of the item, and a description of the process used).
* Miscellaneous: Intermediate-level functional builds.
4. Advanced Level (Grades 9–12)
* Cabinetry: Display, curio, or gun cabinet built with doors.
* Tables: Coffee tables, end tables, or desks highlighting advanced joinery.
* Chest: Cedar chests, blanket boxes, or storage trunks.
* Refinished Item: Advanced furniture restoration (Requires "before" photo, history, cost sheet, and process description).
* Miscellaneous: Large advanced builds.

Quick Tips for Oklahoma 4-H Wood Science Exhibits:
* Size Rules: Miscellaneous and refinished items should be roughly proportional in size to other typical projects listed for your specific grade division.
* Documentation: Always double-check if your county or state fair requires an index card or project card detailing the materials used or hours spent.
* Signature: Don't forget to sign and date your woodwork permanently on the bottom or back before turning it in, or the judges may mark it themselves!
