*Way Back Wednesday*

For this Way Back Wednesday, we’re going back 31 years to celebrate Anita Simpson’s 31 years of service to Northern Oklahoma College.

Northern Oklahoma College recently honored eight retirees whose combined service totaled more than 156 years. Each leaves behind a legacy of dedication, service, and progress that has helped shape NOC for generations.

Among them, Anita Simpson’s impact stands out. During her 31 years at NOC, she helped guide decades of financial growth and stability. During her time as Financial VP, she oversaw the college’s budget growth from $7.4 million to $26.1 million, strengthened reserves, maintained years of clean audits, and helped grow the Foundation assets from $1.1 million to $38.6 million as she served as Treasurer. Her leadership leaves NOC in a strong financial position and her legacy will benefit students, employees, and the institution for years to come.

Pictured here with Anita are Vice President for Enrollment Management Dr. Rick Edgington, Vice President for Community Relations & Development Sheri Snyder, and President Diana Morris, who each shared remarks recognizing Anita’s outstanding contributions and lasting impact on Northern Oklahoma College.

Think You Know Thursday 🤔

Yesterday's Way Back Wednesday took us on a trip back to 1979 and highlighted some of the moments that made that year so memorable. But here's a fun connection you may not have known...

✨ Did you know the very first Miss NOC Pageant was also held in 1979? ✨

It seems especially fitting to recognize that milestone this week, as our very own 2026 Miss NOC, Alia Dust, has been competing for Miss Oklahoma. We're so proud to see her representing NOC and wish her the very best!

Here are a few photos of Alia from this week's competition. 📸

Next week, we'll share photos and memories of some of our former Miss NOC titleholders as we take a look back through the years. In the meantime, if you have photos or special memories of past Miss NOCs, we'd love for you to share them in the comments! Your pictures and stories can help us celebrate this wonderful tradition and preserve its history for everyone to enjoy. ❤️

🎶 Disco fever was sweeping the nation.
🌍 The Roustabouts toured Russia and Romania.
🎓 Northern celebrated the largest graduating class in its history.

Need a little inspiration? Here are a few photos from the 1979 yearbook to take you back and give you a glimpse of what life at NOC looked like that year.

Think you know NOC history?

Did you know that more than 100 years ago, our school briefly went by OIT (Oklahoma Institute of Technology)?

Stating around 1910, members of the Oklahoma Legislature were working to close several state-supported schools through legislation known as the Aiken Bill. Strongly opposed to these efforts, President Glover worked to distinguish the University Preparatory School (UPS) from other institutions and strengthen the case for keeping it open.

As part of that effort, he adopted the name Oklahoma Institute of Technology (OIT). From 1913 to 1915, the school's publications, catalogs, and even diplomas carried the OIT name. However, the name was never officially approved, and in June 1915 the State Board of Education required the school to return to the name UPS.

This page from the 1913 Boomer yearbook features school founder James Wilkin and even refers to him as the "Father of the OIT." It serves as a fascinating reminder of one of the many name changes and transitions that occurred on the road from UPS to NOC.

Here are several more photos of the 1913 Boomer yearbook. Make sure to check out the last picture of the Boomer staff depicting how they felt once they had completed the 1913 Boomer.

takes us all the way back to 1912!

This photo was discovered in a 1912 NOC catalog and features the Executive Committee from more than a century ago. To see how things have changed, and stayed the same, included is a couple of photos of the NOC Executive Council from 2025 for comparison.

From 1912 to 2025, generations of leaders have helped shape the legacy and future of NOC. Which era do you think had the best group photo?

Think you know the history of NOC Enid? Specifically, Bivins Chapel inside the Marshall Building?

Not too long ago, I shared photos of the beautiful stained-glass windows in the chapel. What I didn’t realize at the time was that each of the five double-lancet windows on the east wall represents an important aspect of the Christian mission:

The Preaching Window
The Teaching Window
The Healing Window
The Helping Window
The Transforming Window

Today, I’m sharing a closer look at each window, along with information explaining what each one depicts and symbolizes. These windows are not only beautiful works of art, but they also tell a meaningful story of faith, service, and transformation.

Let me know if you want an even deeper description into each window!

*Way Back Wednesday*

Today we’re traveling back to 1912 and taking a look inside the 3rd Annual Gymnastic and Athletic Carnival program.

As noted in the greeting at the beginning of the program, this three-evening event was designed not only to entertain, but also to demonstrate the importance of systematic physical training within UPS’s educational program.

Inside, you’ll find team photographs of the groups that performed during the three evenings, along with the Executive Committee. Also featured are Mamie Goodman, Girls Physical Trainer; A.W. Briggs, Director of Physical Education; and the carnival mascot, Miss Natalie Carolyn Briggs.

Graduation season is always special, and we love seeing our NOC alum making an impact everywhere they go!

NOC alumnus Chuck Lester proudly represented the Mavericks in the parade following Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine ceremony, which concluded with a second line parade down Rampart Street celebrating all Tulane graduates.

Chuck currently serves as the Assistant Director of Community Wellness Programs at Oklahoma State University, and we’re proud to see him continuing to lead and serve communities so well.

Way to represent, Chuck!
