As residents begin returning to their homes and power restoration efforts continue across Ocean County, we extend our deepest gratitude to the first responders whose heroic efforts saved countless homes and communities during last night’s fire.
The situation is improving, but the battle is not over. Over 12,000 acres of Ocean County have burned due to the Jones Road Fire, and thousands more are expected to be impacted before the blaze reaches full containment. First responders will remain on the front lines in the days ahead to ensure public safety and to continue to protect our homes. Miraculously, not a single life or residence has been lost, a testament to the courage and coordination of those on the front lines. Sadly, some local businesses have been affected and our thoughts are with those local business owners and employees.
In response, the Toms River Chess Club will be holding a fundraiser tomorrow from 5-9 P.M. on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at our regular meeting location 33 Washington Street, Toms River NJ, in support of “Hold on I’m Coming” a local disaster relief organization founded by Mark Haug, a Central Regional High School educator and local Ocean County resident. The group has been on the ground in Waretown, feeding both first responders and residents displaced by the fire. We have already donated $250 and hope to donate more with help from the club's membership and our local community.
In times of crisis, community matters. Every organization, even a chess club, can play a part in making a difference.
