The Barnegat Bay Partnership is one of 28 National Estuary Programs throughout the United States working to improve the environmental health of nationally significant estuaries. Our 2021 Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) identifies the priority problems in the bay and its watershed (land area that drains into the bay) and recommends actions to restore and maintain the water quality and living resources of the estuary.

Last week, teachers from across New Jersey gathered at the Forest Resource Education Center in Jackson for an immersive, hands-on retreat with the Barnegat Bay Partnership's Communication and Education Committee.

They explored interactive exhibits on the Pine Barrens and Bay ecosystems, learned to raise Trout in the Classroom, collected benthic macroinvertebrates to explore water quality, experienced the inclusive Sensory Awareness Trail, practiced tree coring and learned about NJ’s Big Tree Program, and ended the day with laughter-filled wildlife sound challenges led by educator McDuffy Barrow. The team at the BBP was saddened this weekend to see the interaction between a vessel and a Minke Whale in the bay. We are keeping an eye on updates from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center as they work to determine the circumstances of the passing of the Minke.

In the meantime, we thought this was a great opportunity to share some information on responsible boating practices, including the laws outlined in the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.

1. Vessels must remain at least 100 yards from marine mammals, keeping motors off or on neutral.
2. No vessel should stay around an individual or group of marine mammals for more than 30 minutes at a time.
3. Do not feed or encourage any interaction between yourself and the marine mammal.

While Minke whales are rare visitors of the Barnegat Bay, they are known to approach boats in shallow water. This is not an invitation for an interaction, and it is your responsibility to not pursue, torment, or disrupt any behavioral patterns of the animal.

We've seen theories surrounding this incident circulating online and want to urge everyone to be wary of rumors that can spread on social media. We look towards the Marine Mammal Stranding Center take appropriate action and inform the public of findings.

This is a good reminder for boaters to check in on rules and regulations, and to practice responsible captaining through our coastal areas. You never know what you may find, and being a good captain means being ready for anything.

We are thrilled to announce our newest team member Caroline McFarland!

Caroline is excited to join the Barnegat Bay Partnership team as the new Stewardship Coordinator. Having grown up in both Monmouth and Ocean Counties, she is grateful for the opportunity to give back to the communities she calls home.

Caroline brings a unique blend of communication and environmental experience, holding a B.S. in Entertainment and Arts Management from Drexel University.

She has an MSc in Environment, Culture, and Society from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. After returning to New Jersey, she served as the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador for the Barnegat Bay WMA, hosted by BBP, and went on to serve a second term as the Monmouth Watershed Ambassador before rejoining the BBP team.

Caroline will be taking the lead on the Jersey Friendly Yards program and is a welcomed member of the BBP's education team.

Swipe right for a special Blitz honorary captain!!

Matt Bernstein has proudly led the Barnegat Bay Blitz Ship Bottom Clean-Up for the past three years. Before his current role with the Borough of Ship Bottom, Matt taught public school history for 30 years. Now serving as the NJ Clean Communities Coordinator, he’s a familiar face around town — often seen picking up litter and setting an example for others.

Matt believes that no matter how divided the world may seem, keeping our community and the NJ shore clean is something we can all agree on. His hope is to inspire residents to take responsibility for their own waste and help protect the environment we all share.

Joining Matt at cleanups is Lucca — a therapy dog at Ocean Acres School and a beloved helper at community events. Together, they lead with care, compassion, and commitment to keeping the shore beautiful.
