The Barnegat Bay Partnership is one of 28 National Estuary Programs throughout the United States working to improve the environmental health of nationally significant estuaries. Our 2021 Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) identifies the priority problems in the bay and its watershed (land area that drains into the bay) and recommends actions to restore and maintain the water quality and living resources of the estuary.

Barnegat Bay is more than open water.

Just beneath the surface are seagrass beds, one of the most important habitats in our estuary. Nearly 80% of NJ's seagrass is found in the Barnegat Bay Little Egg Harbor estuary, where it provides habitat for young fish, blue crabs, and countless other species while helping keep the bay healthy.

Unfortunately, some of the biggest impacts on seagrass happen out of sight. Damage from anchors, propellers, and foot traffic can take years to recover, and in some places these underwater meadows may never fully grow back.

As we enjoy everything Barnegat Bay has to offer this summer, let's remember that what lies beneath the surface matters too. Choose sandy areas for anchoring whenever possible, avoid running your propeller through shallow seagrass beds, and be mindful of where you step.
