The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC), which cooperatively manages fisheries on the East Coast, is accepting public comments on Atlantic Menhaden Draft Addendum II.

The Draft Addendum considers options to reduce the Chesapeake Bay Reduction Fishery Cap (Bay Cap) by up to 50% and distribute the cap more evenly throughout the fishing season. The options aim to alleviate a concentration of effort that may be affecting other fisheries within the Bay and other potential ecological impacts.

Find information on Maryland’s September 15, in-person hearing, webinar hearing options, and how to submit comments on the ASMFC website:

Osborn Island in Little Egg Harbor in many ways is the "perfect" lagoon community from an environmental standpoint featuring marsh islands, almost no lawns, and strong tidal flow and yet it is currently suffering from its 7th and most severe fish kill yet.

SBB has arranged for independent water quality analysis of the lagoons and has been working with the Township, DEP, Health Department, and Governor's Office to try and get a coordinated response to this issue.

While Osborn Island technically drains to Great Bay and not Barnegat Bay proper, the effects of this fish kill pose a threat to much of the wildlife that call our watershed home, and we are determined to help.
