Toms River “Art Heals” Community Mural for Healing and Recovery

I am working on my GSJS Girl Scout Cadette Silver Award project, which focuses on Hurricane Sandy victims at the Jersey Shore, particularly in Ocean County; along with the unfortunate emotional impact it has had on our communities, especially Toms River with the increase in addiction and mental health, specifically the Opioid Overdose epidemic.

This Mural’s image and message “Art Heals” will touch many lives who see it as a reminder of how they have survived difficult times; how working through different forms of art can be very healing, and is certainly a viable solution to helping one cope with life’s big challenges. My goal is decreasing the stigma attached to mental health and addiction issues, and increase awareness of holistic health approaches many forget to consider. This Girl Scout Cadette Silver Award Toms River “Art Heals” project is meant to serve multiple purposes:

1) Raise awareness of the impact of Hurricane Sandy on our communities in terms of mental health and addiction.

2) Raise awareness of the opioid/opiate overdose epidemic

3) Decrease Stigma attached to mental health and addiction

4) Educate the public on facts related to substance abuse

5) Educate the public on the many forms of artistic expression that can be very healing. Art Therapy is often incorporated into treatment programs.

6) Install a community mural that will not only draw the public to the Downtown Toms River area for business but to inspire others to get involved and make their community a better place in some way.

Mural Location:

Thanks to Yvonne Yaar our expert muralist, and Lotano Development, Inc., the Toms River “Art Heals” community mosaic mural will be placed in downtown Toms River on Cafe Enigma’s external wall structure overlooking a behavioral health counseling center to remind those struggling with addiction, mental health or co-occurring conditions that RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE, and various expressions of art can be very therapeutic and healing.

We are seeking (8) $500 sponsorships, to cover all our costs. Corporate Sponsors’ names will be placed inside of the actual mosaic mural within their very own glass mosaic leaf! The mural's lifespan is approximately 30 to 40 years, so those businesses will get many years of exposure from their modest $500 donation. Not to mention on average, a one-day 1x 10inch x 4inch ad would cost about the same in the newspaper but your leaf will last for 30-40 years.
