Here’s how to tell the difference in Black Swallowtail butterflies.
The butterfly resting in the hand is the male. Notice the large, bright yellow spots across his wings and only a small amount of blue near the hindwings.
The butterfly above is the female. She is typically a bit larger and has smaller yellow spots, but her hindwings display a striking iridescent blue band.
Both males and females are important pollinators, but only females lay their eggs on host plants in the carrot family, including dill, parsley, fennel, and native golden alexanders.
Next time you spot a Black Swallowtail, look for the color pattern: more yellow usually means male, while more blue usually means female.

Crandall Park is the largest trail system in Tolland, CT - home to over 13 miles of forested trails! An accessible paved path travels winds through the forest and leads to various park facilities, such as the playground, seasonal swimming area, picnic pavilion, recreational facilities such as the volleyball court and softball field, wildlife viewing platform over a serene pond, and Tolland Youth Garden. Additional moderate dirt trails stretch beyond these facilities over forested hilltops. Find out more about the trails and facilities: https://www.cttrailfinder.com/trails/trail/crandall-park

Photo (LK/CT Trail Finder): a wooden footbridge over a brook, set in a paved path through a quiet early fall forest. Text reads, “A large network of both paved and packed earth trails through forest, with ponds, picnic areas, recreational fields, and a community garden”.
