Today we commemorate Pearl Harbor day by sharing the story of a Lucas County veteran who was killed 84 years ago today, James Winford Berry.
Fireman Second Class James Winford Berry entered the U.S. Navy in October
1940, he attended Burnham High School in Sylvania, Ohio.
On December 7, 1941, Japanese carrier-based aircraft launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base and ships at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During the attack, the USS Arizona (BB-39) was struck by eight armor-piercing bombs.
More than 1,100 sailors and Marines were
lost along with the ship.
Lucas County residents Nellie Garvison Berry and George Clark Berry sent at least seven of their sons off to war. Two, James Winford and Max Wayne, were Navy men killed in World War II.
James Winford, nicknamed Windie, was a fireman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
Max Wayne, older by about four years, was a seaman first class when he was killed in April 1944. He was initially buried in Australia but after the war was moved to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, not far from where his brother's body remains on the sunken battleship
Arizona.
Today we remember all veterans of Lucas County, who have helped ensure our freedoms by their service.
