🎙️ NEW EPISODE — inside the Rotary Club of Toledo.
Here's something a lot of Toledoans don't know: the Rotary Club of Toledo is the 17th largest Rotary club in the world. Not the country. The world. 🌎
Guest host Vince Croci talked with Scot Hinshaw, the club's immediate past president, about what a club that size actually does.
Start close to home. Four Service Above Self days a year — Vince had just spent one pulling weeds at Toledo GROWS. 🌱 A local foundation that, by Scot's count, gives about $250,000 a year in small grants to Toledo nonprofits. A van to get people to a program. A roof repair. A new boiler. A pilot program somebody wants to try.
Then zoom out. A computer lab in Honduras. Medical equipment that's outdated here but still works, collected and shipped to places that will use it for years.
And the big one: the club has made pre-K preparedness its transformational focus — helping more of Toledo's kids show up ready for kindergarten. 📚 Scot doesn't oversell it. "It's not one we're going to solve anytime soon." But a task force spent the last year building the plan, and he's staying on to help.
Scot isn't from here. He's a D.C.-area guy who moved to his wife's hometown and joined Rotary to meet people. His trick was to sit somewhere different every Monday:
"I was going to a new table somewhere else in the room, just to find a few new people that I did not know."
That habit put him on the membership committee, then the board, then a three-year path to president. This summer he handed the gavel to Candice Harrison — the club's first African American president and the sixth woman to lead it. 👏
His advice to her: "You are going to lead in your own way."
