Pictured here are the before-and-after photos of an electrical panel replacement completed through one of our recent rent escrow cases.

The landlord was initially ordered to bring the panel into good and proper working condition but refused to hire a licensed electrician. Instead, the landlord insisted on using an in-house handyman who had already attempted repairs that were unsuccessful.

As a result, The Fair Housing Center successfully petitioned the court to release $9,000 in escrow funds to our client, allowing her to hire a licensed electrician and ensure the work was completed safely and correctly.

One of the most important steps parents can take is to have their child tested for lead, especially if they live in or regularly visit homes built before 1978, where lead-based paint was commonly used.

In partnership with the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, and The Fair Housing Center, we work to identify homes with lead hazards and ensure families have access to the resources they need.

Together, we’re committed to protecting tenants, and homeowners, and uphold the principle that safe housing is a basic right. Find helpful resources from our partners in the comments.

The Fair Housing Center is proud to share a major milestone for fair housing and housing access in northwest Ohio. Earlier this week, a Lucas County judge granted the first known Certificate of Qualification for Housing (CQH) in the county, with assistance from TFHC.

CQHs help reduce housing barriers for individuals with criminal records by creating a legal presumption that past convictions alone should not automatically disqualify someone from housing. The law also provides protections for landlords who rent to individuals with a CQH.

“This case demonstrates the importance of removing unnecessary barriers to housing,” said George Thomas, CEO and General Counsel at The Fair Housing Center. “Stable housing supports successful reentry, employment, family stability, and safer communities.”

We also recognize Staff Attorney Noah Woods for his work in securing this outcome and helping establish the local CQH process in Lucas County.

Learn more about CQHs through the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction: drc.ohio.gov

At this time, TFHC is not actively accepting CQH cases for representation as we continue evaluating future clinic and community partnership models to expand access to this process.
