As we move into another exciting summer of Scouting, we wanted to take a moment to share several upcoming district and council opportunities for our Scouts, families, and leaders to participate in throughout the coming months.

Effective immediately, any youth or adult whose membership has expired may reregister within 12 months of their expiration date without submitting a new application.

The only exception is for adults transferring to a different unit with a different Chartered Organization Representative (COR), as a new application will still be required in that situation.

Effective with the 2026 National Annual Meeting, Scouting America has lowered the minimum age for commissioner registration from 21 to 18.

Young adults who have aged out of the program can now step into a commissioner role right away — staying connected to Scouting and supporting the health of units in their communities. Unit service is one of the most impactful ways a volunteer can serve, and this change means we won't lose passionate Scouters simply because of an age threshold.

It's also worth noting that commissioner registration is the only council- or district-level volunteer registration option available to adults 18–21 years old. Unit service is a natural fit for this age group — college, new jobs, and busy schedules are all part of life at 18, and the flexibility of a commissioner role means volunteers can contribute on a schedule that works for them. Unit commissioners, assistant district commissioners, and assistant council commissioners are great starting points for anyone new to the work.
