Eclipse was born out of a desire and passion to see the unique experiences of African-American, Latinx, and other communities of color at the intersection of LGBQT+ identities represented in Toledo, OH. The word Eclipse is a reference to the way our intersections meet and mesh, none of them detached from the other in how we experience the world, and how society responds to us. We are here to build intentional community, to lean into hard conversations and find resolution, to empower and encourage each other. We are here to rise.
Why specifically Black, Brown, and POC?
Similarly to the LGBTQ+ community needing safe spaces to build community and to reduce exposure to homophobia, People of Color need safe spaces to reduce exposure to racism and discrimination. People of Color have been traditionally left out of popular movements in the United States and abroad. One such movement is voting rights in the United States.
Conversely, LGBTQ+ people have been left out and even erased out of Black, Brown and other POC-led movements, such as during the Civil Rights Era. It is crucial to bring these marginalized identities to the forefront, and celebrate people at all their intersections.
Who can become involved?
Although anyone of any background, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, etc. are welcome to join - we would like to center those most marginalized among us. Your allyship is necessary to continue to lift the voices of those whom are unheard, but that means giving others the chance to speak. All of us have different levels of privilege we can use to elevate someone else.
