October is Blindness Awareness Month, and today, October 15, is White Cane Awareness Day.
White Cane Awareness Day is observed annually on October 15 to recognize the independence, confidence, and achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. Its roots date back to 1964, when President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the first White Cane Safety Day. The white cane became a widely recognized symbol of independence and a practical mobility tool, helping people who are blind navigate their surroundings safely. Today, the observance also raises awareness about the rights of people with vision loss and reminds the public of the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and respect.
