Celebrating the Top Writers from the Duncan Lake Junior High Invitational! ✍️🏆

These students stood out for their creativity, hard work, and powerful writing during our very first JustWrite Michigan tournament. We are so proud of the way they rose to the challenge and shared their voices on the page.

We are thrilled to celebrate the Duncan Lake Junior High Invitational, the inaugural JustWrite tournament in Michigan! ✍️

This first-ever Michigan event brought together 5 schools and more than 60 student writers for a day filled with creativity and powerful writing. From the first prompt to the final round, these junior high students showed what happens when young writers are given the chance to take their ideas seriously and put their voices on the page.

Students also had the incredible opportunity to hear from author Gary Schmidt, whose presentation made the day even more memorable and inspiring for our young writers. His visit was a powerful reminder that stories matter and that student voices deserve to be nurtured and celebrated.

We are so grateful to the students, coaches, judges, and host school who helped make this day such a success. This tournament marks an exciting beginning for JustWrite Michigan, and we can’t wait to see this community of writers continue to grow.

Thank you to everyone who helped launch this new chapter. Michigan, we’re just getting started. 💙

Tell the story of a relationship, crush, or connection that isn’t what it first appears to be—and the moment your character realizes the truth.

MICHIGAN! COME JOIN US!!

🚀 Ignite your students’ writing passion!

JustWrite Michigan is hosting an interscholastic creative writing tournament for students in grades 6–12 at Duncan Lake Middle School on March 14, 2026 (9 AM–4 PM).

Students will write from timed, genre-based prompts, connect with other teen writers, and end the day with a special presentation by Gary Schmidt, author of The Wednesday Wars and Jupiter Rising.
