Fairweather Farm Rescue Inc is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of all equines in need. In addition to my own horses and mini donkeys, over the y

ears we have taken in a number of retired horses and horses in need of medical care, hoof care, and lots of TLC and groceries. We have funded the rescue on our own and have decided to make it an official nonprofit so that we can save more horses and livestock with your help! Feed, hay, medical care, hoof care, medications, and farm maintenance is no small price tag. With the help of donations and volunteers, we can save more horses, get them healthy, and adopt them out to stable, loving homes. The more animals we adopt out, the more we can save!

Last evening, we had a local Girl Scout Troop visit the rescue to learn about our rescue and do some community service. The troop and their families helped us scrub all of the horses feed buckets, got to brush out Dakota and Geronimo, and even turned Geronimo into a real life unicorn!!! He was a good sport about it lol. One troop member ran a donation drive for the rescue and was able to donate some much needed feed, treats, and many supplies! We all had a great time and are so thankful for all of their help. We loved having the troop and their families visit the rescue. It was so much fun!
And a huge thank you to my helpers, Charlie, Damian, Lydia, Alyse and Wayne! I couldn't have done it without you all ❤️🐴

⚠️ Scam Alert Involving Fairweather Farm Rescue ⚠️

I hate having to make a post like this, but I want to make everyone aware of something that happened this morning.

Two very kind individuals arrived at our farm to see a horse—one that I do not own and have never even seen. They had traveled all the way from New York after finding the horse listed for sale online. Unfortunately, a fraudulent seller gave them our address and took a deposit before disappearing.

We attempted to contact the seller together, but as expected, there has been no response.

My heart absolutely breaks for them. It’s sickening that someone could take advantage of people this way.

For clarity: if you search our address, it will come up as Fairweather Farm Rescue, along with our phone number and social media pages. If you ever have questions, please call, text, or message us directly. Any horses we have available will only ever be listed on our official social media pages.

This is the first time someone has used our name and address in a scam, and I truly hope it’s the last. Please stay cautious and help spread the word.

This is a welfare conversation.
That’s why it’s happening on my page.

I wasn’t going to speak on this because it’s a sensitive topic, but I think we need to have a real conversation about rider weight from a welfare perspective.

This isn’t about male vs female.
This isn’t about shaming bodies.

This is about load.

There is a welfare limit when it comes to what a horse can comfortably and safely carry, and pretending that limit doesn’t exist doesn’t help anyone, especially not the horse.

If I could bold this line I would:

Horses don’t owe us riding.

And I think that’s where a lot of this gets blurred.

A number that gets thrown around a lot is the “20% rule”. That a horse can carry 20% of their body weight.

But what often gets left out is that this guideline is based on a fit, conditioned horse, with appropriate muscling, soundness, and management.

Not a deconditioned horse.
Not a young horse.
Not a horse coming back into work.
Not a horse with any limitations.

And it also includes EVERYTHING.
Rider, saddle, tack.

So even that number isn’t a free pass.
It’s a BEST case scenario.

I say this as someone who was almost 100 lbs heavier and chose to stop riding at my heaviest.

This isn’t coming from judgment. It’s coming from experience and from having to look at things honestly.

There’s also this belief that if someone wants to ride, they should be able to.

But horses aren’t equipment. They’re living beings with physical limits.

And those limits don’t change based on how much we want something.

I understand that horses can be incredibly important for people, including for therapeutic reasons.

But that does NOT have to involve riding.

Connection, groundwork, relationship building, time spent with them. Those things still matter.

This needs to be a conversation about welfare as a whole, not a targeted one about individuals.

Not an excuse to shame people.
Not something to turn into bullying.

But also not something we get to ignore because it’s uncomfortable.
