Hospice can be heartbreaking and wonderful all at once.

We finally received Bailey’s lab results and, well, they’re not the news we were hoping for. Bailey has been living with a failing liver much longer than doctors ever expected she could. Her liver is so small and compromised that, by all accounts, it shouldn’t have been able to keep up the way it has. Unfortunately, it is reaching a point where it simply can’t continue carrying the load much longer.

Our sweet Kendra also had a checkup, and her masses continue to grow, as masses tend to do. She is still her happy, goofy, sunshine-loving self, but she’s definitely slowing down. We’ll be watching her closely and making sure comfort, happiness, and quality of life remain our top priorities.

At The Den, we try to pack as much love, joy, and fun into every single day as possible. We understand just how precious extra days can be when you’re caring for senior dogs, especially those in hospice. Our hearts break every time we have to say goodbye, but knowing that goodbye is somewhere on the horizon also reminds us not to waste a single moment.

So we’ll keep celebrating the good days. We’ll hand out the treats, soak up the snuggles, take the slow walks, and let the girls nap in every sunny spot they can find. We can’t stop time, but we can make sure every day they have left is filled with love, comfort, dignity, and the feeling of being deeply cherished.

And if there’s one thing Bailey and Kendra have taught us, it’s that sometimes the most beautiful chapters are the ones we know won’t last forever.

Sadie Appreciation Post 💜

At 15 years old, Sadie is the oldest pup at The Den and, without question, the spunkiest. She also holds the unofficial title of Loudest Resident. This girl has opinions, and she makes sure they’re heard. Whether breakfast is running two minutes behind schedule or she needs to go outside immediately, Sadie will happily announce it at a volume that could send even the most seasoned librarian diving for cover.

As vocal as she is, Sadie is every bit as sweet. Our snuggle sessions are top-tier, and her gentle doggy kisses never fail to make me smile. She’s become my little shadow, following me from room to room throughout the day. I’d love to think it’s because she simply can’t get enough of me, but the more likely explanation is that she’s convinced treats magically appear wherever I go.

Sweet Sadie walks with an adorable head tilt thanks to a past bout of vestibular disease - think vertigo for dogs. She also has a grade four heart murmur. Yet neither of those challenges has convinced her to slow down. She still greets each day with enthusiasm, determination, and plenty to say about absolutely everything.

Sadie is proof that age is just a number. She fills The Den with personality, laughter, and love, and we are completely smitten with her. We feel incredibly lucky that this special girl is spending her golden years as part of our pack. 💜🐾

Happy Best Friends Day from me and my very best friends. ❤️

Life with senior dogs isn't always glamorous. It's medications, vet appointments, laundry (so much laundry), cleaning up accidents (sometimes even stepping in them), and worrying over every little change (don’t even get me started on how much time I spend watching for the tell tale rise and fall of breath anytime these pups are sleeping too soundly).

It's also tail wags, sunbathing sessions, stuffie collections, happy dances at mealtime (mostly from our resident piggy, Sadie), constant kisses, and quiet moments spent cuddling up together.

These dogs have taught me more about love, patience, resilience, and living in the moment than I could ever teach them. Every day I get with them is a gift, and I wouldn't trade a single gray muzzle, cloudy eye, or slow stroll for anything.

Today I'm celebrating Bailey, Kendra, Sadie, and all the dogs who have called Duke Dog's Den home. They may not know it's Best Friends Day, but they're definitely my favorite best friends.🐾❤️

Please send lots of positive thoughts to Bailey Bear. ❤️

Our beautiful girl hasn’t been feeling her best over the past few days, and we’re hoping for brighter days ahead very soon.

We’re incredibly grateful for the wonderful medical staff at the SPCA of Brevard and the amazing team at Brevard Veterinary Hospital for taking such good care of her. Bailey has a lot of people rooting for her, and we’re hopeful she’ll be back to enjoying her beloved stuffies, supervising Den activities, and being the queen of everything before long.

Thank you for keeping our sweet girl in your thoughts. 🫶🏻

Three years ago today, we said goodbye to Duke Dog.

For those who never had the chance to meet him, Duke wasn’t just a dog. He was the reason Duke Dog’s Den exists.

Duke spent many months sitting in a shelter. He struggled to connect with staff and potential adopters, had a negative reaction to men, and was considered behaviorally challenged. Realistically, his future was uncertain and without intervention, euthanasia was likely.

I was asked to foster him during his heartworm treatment. It was my first experience in animal rescue. I walked into the shelter not expecting much considering he hadn’t responded well to anyone else. But he did respond to the tennis ball I brought with me…and the rest is history.

That tennis ball, and all the ones that followed, became a symbol of trust, progress, friendship, and love. It was a reward for good behavior, a comfort item, and a way for new people to show Duke they were his friend. It was his favorite toy, his nap buddy, and he was rarely without one.

It quickly became obvious that Duke and I connected just as naturally as he connected with that tennis ball. I knew my first foster would also become my first foster fail - or really, foster success.

Duke needed structure, professional training, patience, and a whole lot of love. Over time, he learned how to simply be a happy dog. A loving dog. A safe dog.

I was lucky enough to spend nine years with him before he passed away from a rare tumor at the age of 11. It was, without question, the hardest day of my life.

Throwing myself into Duke Dog’s Den and helping senior and terminally ill dogs became part of how I coped with losing him. I see Duke in every dog that comes through The Den. In every cuddle, every kiss, every tennis ball carried proudly through The Den. In every life we’re able to help.

At Duke Dog’s Den, we honor Duke and his legacy by giving senior and hospice dogs a safe, loving place to land so they never have to face the end of their lives alone.

We are small by design so every pup can receive personalized care based on their individual medical needs, along with the attention, comfort, and love they need while going through that care.

Everything we do here exists because one shelter dog decided to trust me enough to chase a tennis ball. 🎾🫶🏻🐶

🚨 FINAL REMINDER FROM THE CUTENESS CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE 🚨

Tomorrow is the LAST day to vote in the Brevard Community’s Choice Awards and these three have assembled to politely demand your support. 🐾

Wags to Whiskers was nominated for Best Pet Sitter/Dog Walker and Duke Dog’s Den was nominated for Best Nonprofit/Charity.

Every single vote matters.

For small organizations like ours, this isn’t just about an award. It’s about exposure, community support, and helping more people discover what we do. Wags to Whiskers truly is “Pet Sitting with a Purpose” because every booking helps support the senior and hospice dogs of Duke Dog’s Den. ❤️

You only have to register ONCE and then you can vote daily through tomorrow, May 25. And remember, you do NOT have to live in Brevard to vote. Link in comments or scan the QR code in our cover photo.

So if these faces have ever made you smile, laugh, cry, or immediately want to hand over snacks, we’d be so grateful for your vote.

The campaign staff thanks you. 🫶🏻
