January is National Radon Action Month – a reminder to protect your home and health from radon exposure! Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter homes through cracks in the foundation and poses serious health risks, including lung cancer.
Iowa HHS estimates that 5 in 7 homes across Iowa have elevated radon levels, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified all counties in Iowa as Zone 1. Zone 1 counties have a predicted average indoor radon screening level of more than 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) - the total average indoor radon level in Iowa is 8.5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).
Take Action!
🧪Test your home: Radon test kits are available at local hardware stores and online. Look for kits that meet EPA standards for reliability and accuracy.
📞Mitigate if necessary: If your home’s radon level exceeds the EPA’s recommended level of 4.0 pCi/L, consider contacting a radon mitigation professional to reduce the risk.
