BIG changes are coming to how childhood vaccines are approached in the United States.
President Trump signed a new Executive Order today focused on vaccine safety, stronger scientific standards, parental rights, and medical autonomy.
Some of the key pieces:
• Moving toward administering vaccines individually and at separate medical visits, including separating combination vaccines when individual products are available
• Establishing stronger “Gold Standard Science” for vaccine research and safety, with greater transparency, better data, and more rigorous evaluation of potential adverse effects
• Strengthening parental rights and protecting access to vaccine exemptions
• Supporting medical autonomy and allowing parents and their doctors to make individualized medical decisions based on what is best for each child
• Reexamining vaccine policies and recommendations using updated evidence and stronger safety standards
There is much more included in this Executive Order, and we’ll continue digging into the details.
It is also important to remember what has happened since the vaccine policy changes announced in December. Some of those actions have been tied up in the courts, delaying changes at the federal level. This Executive Order provides another path for changes to move forward.
And this is exactly why STATE LEGISLATION matters!
Federal administrations change. Federal policies can change. Executive actions can be challenged in court.
Protections written into state law give families another layer of protection for parental rights, exemptions, informed consent, and medical autonomy.
We are encouraged by the movement happening at the federal level, but our work here in Iowa remains just as important.
Medical freedom must be protected at every level.
