My name is Tess Beams. I am twelve years old and I am in 6th grade at Maple Place Middle School in Oceanport, NJ. I am writing to seek your support for a very exciting new program that I am starting the Friends with Autism Soccer League (FWASL).
The FWASL is a developmental soccer program that will begin at the Shore Center for Students with Autism, a special education school that serves students ages 3-21 with autism in Tinton Falls, NJ . The purpose of this program is to teach all interested students technical soccer skills as well as the principles of the game in a fun, safe, nurturing environment. In order to accomplish this, I have partnered with Michael Turtle, founder and owner of Soccer Specific Training Inc. who will provide volunteer professional soccer trainers to work with the students using SST’s developmental curriculum.
In addition to learning the technical and tactical principles of soccer, it is really important to me that my friends at the Shore Center also have opportunities to work on their communication and social skills. So, we will be inviting siblings, friends, and other peers to volunteer their time to come and play and learn alongside the Shore Center students. My hope is that typical children will learn more about autism and that my autistic friends will be able to make new friends and practice valuable communication skills. Although for its first year, we are beginning our work at the Shore Center, my long-term goal is to ensure that all students with disabilities have access to high quality athletic programs and that more school, recreation, and other competitive programs are educated about how to be more inclusive of students with disabilities.
About Tess Beams: I have been playing soccer since I was four years old. It is my passion and playing has taught me invaluable skills, like goal-setting, communication, leadership, teamwork, friendship, problem-solving, and a variety of technical and tactical skills. I am currently the starting outside back for the Wall Elite Atletico 2006 girls and the starting center midfielder for the Maple Place Chargers. I began visiting the Shore Center for Students with Autism last year with my mom who works here. I immediately fell in love with the students and they quickly became my friends. I wanted to spend more time and give back to this incredible community...So, I created the FWASL! It is my mission to ensure that all students regardless of ability have access to high quality athletic programs and that more school, recreation, and other competitive programs are inclusive of students with all abilities.
