Our Story
The Lakes Region Art Association (LRAA), located in Laconia, NH was founded in 1940 by five local artists, and was originally the Laconia Art Group. Its purpose is to provide a supportive and educational forum for local artists, both amateur and professional. Its mission is to enhance the ability of its members to create art and to further the appreciation of art in the Lakes Region area by the promotion, education, sale, and display of the visual fine arts. The Association is non-profit. By the time the group was fifty years old its name had changed to the Laconia Art Association. In recent years, the Association realized that members lived in many towns in the Lake Winnipesaukee area. To be more representative of the membership, the name was recently changed to the Lakes Region Art Association. The original purpose has remained the same. Annual Membership Shows Members participate in many art shows in the Lakes Region. Each year the Association sponsors its annual member show. This event is always a wonderful venue for the group and very successful. Each year prize winners are selected by three award winning guest judges. One of the awards is the Loran Percy Award, for a New England oil landscape. Loran Percy was an accomplished painter, teacher and a very active member of the group. Membership Membership in the Lakes Region Art Association is open to artists and patrons of the arts. LRAA is a non-profit organization supported entirely by membership dues and club activities. The Association is most appreciative of local support. The Association meets monthly from March to November. Besides the business portion of the meeting, members usually are treated to a guest speaker or demonstrator. The guests may demonstrate a new technique, their approach to their work, a new material or something historical. Association artists explore the use of various techniques, mediums and styles. The Association seeks to nurture the creation and appreciation of the visual arts in the Lakes Region and promotes exposure of artists’ works to the public. The longest continuous members are Roger Gagne, since 1968 and Robert (Bob) Prapuolenis, since l976.
