Each year, people living in or fleeing from war zones are subjected to horrifying violence and abuse. Sexual and gender-based violence, forced marriage, forced labor, and torture are daily risks. The Blue Butterfly Foundation stands for peace and diplomacy throughout the world. We can do better.

After writing a wonderful, humorous piece for her college newspaper about life as an international student, Kabita Karki was asked to read the piece to the entire faculty and staff on February 3, 2026. She received a roaring standing ovation!

EDUCATION – EQUALITY – EMPOWERMENT
Impact of conflicts and crises on women and girls:
• INCREASED VIOLENCE: In 2024, more than 4,600 cases of conflict-related sexual violence – including as a tactic of war, torture, terror and political repression – were documented by the United Nations, an increase of 87% between 2022 and 2024.
|
• GENDER-BASED EXTREMES: Gender-based violence was assessed as severe or extreme in 22 of 25 countries that experienced humanitarian crises.
|
• DISPLACEMENT: At the end of 2024, an estimated 123.2 million people were forcibly displaced. Over 60 million forcibly displaced and stateless women and girls face elevated risks of gender-based violence.
|
• FOOD INSECURITY: In 2024, 10.9 million pregnant and breastfeeding women faced acute malnutrition in 21 countries with nutrition crises.
|
• ATTACKS ON HEALTHCARE INFRASTRUCTURE: In 2024, attacks on health centers deprived millions of women of life-saving services, including sexual and reproductive healthcare.
|
• GIRLS’ EDUCATION UNDER FIRE: Over 85 million children affected by crises are out of school, the majority are girls.
|
• WOMEN’S VOICES IN THE MEDIA: A 2024 report by CARE found that while media coverage of conflicts increased more than six-fold between 2013 and 2023, only 5% of articles focused on women’s experiences in war – and only 0.04% highlighted women’s contribution as leaders in peace processes.

In memory of Martin Luther King Jr., the Blue Butterfly Foundation honors his legacy and lifelong fight against injustice by supporting and uplifting people in need. We honor his vision of equality, justice, and service to humanity.
This is a time to support one another and stand with those among us who are vulnerable and in need. As Dr. King reminded us, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?“

This was a TOUGH race! Running against the incumbent with the odds stacked against him, our amazing future politician, Kamlesh Baral, campaigned day and night to become the President of Student Government at the State University of New York at New Paltz. He campaigned to become the voice of the students in a time of great upheaval, concern, and challenges in our country and the world.

Kamlesh is a testament to the resilient spirit of immigrants—a poor immigrant from a poor country—from the untouchable caste—a bright light who will never be dimmed no matter what the challenge. He won the presidency! I have never been so proud of the hard work, dedication, commitment, and hope that shines at the center of this beautiful human being.

The Blue Butterfly Foundation and its family, friends, and greater community congratulate Kamlesh Baral for brightening the world and always fighting for what is right! We love you!

The Blue Butterfly Foundation holds Mamta Kafle Bhatt in our hearts today. Mamta, a 28-year-old Nepalese nurse living in Northern Virginia, has been missing for over three weeks. Her husband, Naresh Bhatt, was arrested today and charged with concealing a dead body. Their daughter, Neema, turned one year old on Tuesday.

In 2018, the Women’s Rehabilitation Center of Nepal reported domestic violence the highest reported category of crime against women at 65%. Earlier reports show 76% of the violence suffered by women was attributed to husbands, while 24% was attributed to family members. Things have only grown worse since the pandemic.

Justice for Mamta and for all victims of domestic violence, both near and far. We stand with you. You are not alone.
