With historic Hangar B now transitioning to the nonprofit Vintage Aviation Museum, a new chapter is beginning for the Tillamook Air Museum, and we could use a little help from our community as we get ready to open the doors again.

𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟗, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟓:𝟎𝟎–𝟖:𝟎𝟎 𝐩.𝐦.

We’ll be cleaning aircraft, exhibit boards and glass doors, folding and putting away the tarps that protected our aircraft during the closure, moving some of our smaller aircraft back into position, and counting Gift Shop merchandise as we complete our inventory.

All supplies and materials will be provided, and food and refreshments will be served.

We know many of you have been following the storm damage to the hangar. Work is continuing to remove damaged material and prepare that portion of the roof for repair. The damaged area is at the far end of the hangar, well away from where our volunteer activities will take place.

Getting the museum ready to reopen is a heavy lift, but with community support, it’s absolutely doable. If you’ve been wanting to help get the Tillamook Air Museum back up and running, this is your chance to roll up your sleeves and be part of it!

𝐖𝐄’𝐑𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆!

After ten long months, we are thrilled to announce that the Tillamook Air Museum will reopen to the public on Thursday, October 29!

Since December’s storm, an incredible amount of work has taken place behind the scenes, and we are moving quickly to get the Museum ready to once again welcome visitors through the doors of Hangar B.

With historic Hangar B & the Tillamook Air Museum now under the ownership of the nonprofit Vintage Aviation Museum, a new chapter is beginning for the Tillamook Air Museum. Our first priority has been to restore the museum experience our visitors knew before the storm, returning aircraft, exhibits and collections to the museum and preparing Hangar B for reopening. At the same time, we are already looking ahead, with plans to continue improving exhibits, adding more to see and building on what makes the Tillamook Air Museum such a special place.

Work on Hangar B is moving forward as well. We are actively working through the details needed to patch the section of roof damaged in last December’s storm, while continuing to plan for the long-term care of this remarkable historic building.
Reopening is a major milestone, and it is only the beginning. There is still plenty ahead of us, but things are moving quickly, and we are excited about what comes next.

We also want to thank everyone who has supported the museum, volunteered their time and encouraged us along the way. Getting to this point would not have been possible without that support.

Join us at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, as we officially reopen the Tillamook Air Museum. To celebrate our return, the Museum will remain open until 7:00 p.m. that day.

Many new friends have joined us since the sale announcement, and we're so glad you're here. A lot has happened in the last few months, so here's a quick recap and answers to the questions we hear most. Feel free to save this post and share it with anyone who wants to get caught up.

✈️ Recent updates

August 20: The Port of Tillamook Bay Commissioners approved a term sheet to lease the land, and later sell, historic Hangar B to Vintage Aviation Museum, a Utah-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Roof work is underway: The Port contracted removal of the storm-damaged roof flap and asbestos abatement, which began in mid-September and is expected to take two to four weeks.

Roof repair is next: Vintage Aviation Museum has plans and a contractor lined up to start repairing and closing the hole as soon as that work is finished. The goal is to begin work on closing the opening in the roof.

$50,000 from our community: Friends of the Tillamook Air Museum (FOTAM) donated $50,000, raised through their grassroots Save Hangar B campaign, toward the roof repairs. Thank you to every volunteer and donor who made that possible!

Last week, Vintage Aviation Museum and the Port of Tillamook Bay completed the sale. Vintage Aviation Museum owns Hangar B, while the Port of Tillamook Bay continues to own the land and leases it to VAM under the ground lease.

FAQs:

Is the museum open?
Not yet. We're working behind the scenes to reopen and will share a date as soon as we have one.

Is the Tillamook Air Museum changing its name?
No. It will always be the Tillamook Air Museum.

Who owns Hangar B?
The sale has now been completed. Vintage Aviation Museum owns Hangar B, while the Port of Tillamook Bay continues to own the land and leases it to VAM under the ground lease.

Who is Vintage Aviation Museum?
A nonprofit dedicated to preserving historic aircraft and aviation history. They plan to bring most of their aircraft collection to Tillamook and eventually use the entire hangar for exhibits, preservation, education and visitor experiences.

Who is FOTAM / Save Hangar B?
Friends of the Tillamook Air Museum is a separate, volunteer-run nonprofit that raises funds in support of the museum and Hangar B. FOTAM doesn't operate the museum. Vintage Aviation Museum and the air museum staff that is staying on handle the hangar, the aircraft and the collection.

Where are the aircraft and artifacts?
The aircraft remain inside Hangar B, where they're monitored and protected. Artifacts were moved to secure, weather-protected locations while the museum is closed.

Why are you fundraising if there's a new owner?
It's a fair question. The change in ownership didn't come with a repair budget. As a nonprofit, Vintage Aviation Museum can often repair the hangar faster and for less than a government agency, by negotiating directly with contractors and seeking donated or discounted materials. Donations are how that work gets paid for.

What about FEMA funding?
FEMA approved funding to the Port for debris removal and asbestos abatement only, with the Port covering a 25% match.

Where did previous donations go?
Funds raised for Hangar B have been allocated toward the roof repair for Hangar B. We'll keep sharing regular updates on what's raised and how it's used.

Will Vintage Aviation Museum fix the rest of the hangar, too?
Yes, one step at a time. The roof comes first, then updates on each phase will be shared as they begin.

Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Both Vintage Aviation Museum and FOTAM are 501(c)(3) nonprofits.

We're proud to share that Friends of the Tillamook Air Museum (FOTAM) has donated $50,000 to Vintage Aviation Museum to help repair the storm-damaged roof of historic Hangar B!

Every dollar of this gift came from you. It was raised one donation at a time through FOTAM's volunteer-led Save Hangar B campaign: individual gifts, GoFundMe contributions, merchandise sales, and local events. To every volunteer who worked a table, every neighbor who chipped in, and every person who shared a post: thank you. This is your gift to Hangar B.

🔨 Where the money goes
These funds will go directly toward roof repair to close the large hole torn in Hangar B's roof by last December's storm. Sealing that opening is the most urgent step in protecting the hangar, and the aircraft inside it, before winter weather sets in.

🤝 Who does what
We know there have been a lot of changes, so here's how it works now:

Vintage Aviation Museum (VAM), a Utah-based 501(c)(3), is now the museum's owner and operator, and plans to bring most of its aircraft collection to Tillamook.

The Port of Tillamook Bay continues to own the land and leases it to VAM.

Tillamook Air Museum staff is staying on and caring for the hangar, the aircraft, and the collection day-to-day.

FOTAM / Save Hangar B is a separate, volunteer-run nonprofit that raises funds for the museum and Hangar B.

And one thing will never change: this is, and will always be, the Tillamook Air Museum.

💬 Why more funding is still needed
We've heard your questions, and they're fair ones. The change in ownership did not come with a repair budget. As a nonprofit, VAM can often get work done faster and for less than a government agency can, but donations are what pay for it.

FEMA approved funding to the Port for debris removal and asbestos abatement only, with the Port covering a 25% match. The roof repair itself is not covered. It's also only the first step in protecting one of the largest wooden clear-span structures in the world.

$50,000 is a strong start, but it's not the finish line. We promise to keep you updated regularly on what's been raised, what it's paying for, and what comes next.
