Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico was granted Federal 501c3 status ( a non-profit charitable organization) in January, 2001. Donations of money and other items are tax deductible. We are fortunate to be included in the United Way campaign. We were also designated as a Great Non-Profit Organization for 2013 through 2020 by Greatnonprofits.org. We are also considered one of top five Best Places to Adopt

a Pet by the readers of Albuquerque The Magazine for 2014 and 2020. We can always use towels (both paper and cloth), blankets, pet bedding, collars, leashes, sweaters, bowls, cleaning supplies, wee pads, old ace bandages, and e-collars. We recycle your unwanted dog houses and fencing to folks who need them. Many of our animals come to us in need of various types of veterinary services. We always have a few geriatric pets who require heart, thyroid, and other medications. Donations to our medical funds would be very much appreciated. Donations can be sent to us at Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico, PO Box 1316, Tijeras, NM 87059 or on our website through JustGive or PayPal. Meet Gracie! 🐾
Gracie is a precious 12-year-old, 14-pound Maltese who is ready to spend her golden years being loved and adored by a family of her very own.
This sweet, mellow girl is happiest when she is close to her people, whether she is curled up beside you in bed, snoozing nearby in her dog bed, riding shotgun on a car ride, or joining you for a peaceful neighborhood stroll. She simply loves being part of everyday life.
Do not let her age fool you. Gracie still enjoys treats, walks, cuddle time, and all the little joys life has to offer. She walks nicely on leash, uses a doggie door like a pro, has wonderful house manners, and will go into her crate when asked. She is also low shedding, making her an easy and lovable companion.
Gracie would thrive in a calm, quiet home where she can be the center of attention and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle full of love and companionship. She would do best without other dogs and with respectful older children only. A doggie door would help her feel right at home.
Gracie’s adoption fee is generously sponsored by Perfection Honda.

🌾🐾 FOXTAIL SEASON IS HERE — PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE! 🐾🌾

They may look harmless, but foxtails can be extremely dangerous for dogs. These barbed grass seed heads are designed to move in one direction—into the body—and they do not work their way back out on their own.

⚠️ Foxtails can:
• Become lodged between paw pads
• Enter the ears, eyes, or nose
• Embed in the skin and cause painful infections
• Be inhaled into the lungs
• Migrate through tissue, causing serious medical complications
• Require emergency veterinary treatment

🐕 Dogs with long coats, feathered ears, and active outdoor lifestyles are especially at risk.

After every walk, hike, or play session, take a few minutes to check your dog's:
👂 Ears
👃 Nose
👀 Eyes
🐾 Between the toes and paw pads
🐕 Underbelly and armpits
🦴 Coat and tail area

🚨 If your dog suddenly starts sneezing, shaking their head, limping, licking a paw excessively, or develops swelling, seek veterinary care right away.

A quick inspection today could prevent a painful and costly emergency tomorrow.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated to help Billie! ❤️

Because of your generosity and support, Billie is scheduled to have her surgery on June 18th. This surgery will help give her a more comfortable, pain-free future, and we couldn't have gotten to this point without all of you.

We are incredibly grateful for every donation, share, and kind word that helped make this possible.

Please keep Billie in your thoughts as she prepares for surgery. We will continue to keep everyone updated on her progress and recovery.

Thank you for helping change Billie's life! 🐾❤️

🏢 Local business partners needed!

Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico is looking for a local business to host us indoors for an adoption event on Saturday, July 11th, from 11 AM–2 PM.

We’ll bring the adoptable dogs, supplies, volunteers, and event materials. We just need a welcoming indoor space where the community can meet some wonderful dogs looking for forever homes.

Hosting is a great way to support a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue, bring positive attention to your business, and help save lives.

Interested in partnering with us? Please message us or visit www.lapdogrescue.org.

🐾 Did you know dogs "talk" with their whole bodies? 🐶👀

Most people wait for a growl or a bark to know a dog is unhappy, but by then, the dog is already at the top of their stress "ladder."

The secret to a happy, safe relationship with your pup is learning to recognize the quiet signs they give us long before they feel they have to act.

How to read the ladder:

🟢 Bottom Rungs: These are "polite" requests for space. If your dog is yawning (when not tired), licking their lips (or a person or other dog), or turning their head away, they are saying, "I'm a little uncomfortable right now."

🟡 Middle Rungs: As they move into the yellow and orange zones, their body becomes stiff and they may stop blinking. This is a clear "Please stop" signal.

🔴 Top Rungs: When the lower signals are missed or ignored, a dog feels they have no choice left but to growl, snap, or bite to protect themselves.

Understanding this chart helps us advocate for our dogs and prevent stressful situations before they start! 🛡️❤️

Note: Most dogs won't show every signal, and some dogs may skip "rungs."

Thank you to Dr. Kendal Shepherd, who initially developed the Ladder of Canine Communication, and Dr. Rhiannon Sandoval for helping educate dog lovers and advocates about canine body language and communication.
