Our good boy Elliot has grown up to be such a handsome and gentle fella! He will turn 5 in the fall and we’re finally admitting he’s not a baby goat anymore. 🥹

Everybody has been loving these cooler days (Elliot, and US included) and it’s good to see them out grazing in the daytime again.

It has taken us extra long to recover from a hard winter and hard spring this year and we’re glad to finally be enjoying the fruits of our labor with all the animals. 🙂

Earlier this week we came home to clucking in the rose bush. After a bit of searching we discovered a sad little rooster, dropped off here without notice.

This isn’t the way it should be. Backyard hens are often beloved while roosters continue to be disliked and abandoned.

This little guy could have stayed in his home in a second pen. Roosters and hens can live peacefully apart from each other. Our hope is that someday that’s what life will look like for roosters everywhere.

But for now that rarely exists, so he’s here, and he will be as beloved as any hen.

Everything has been so good and peaceful lately, we should have known that meant trouble was a-brewing!

Little Oskar the goat has had a swollen knee for a few weeks and we had been treating it with ice. It didn’t seem to be bothering him at that time. Unfortunately early this week, he started limping so we knew a vet call was in order. As we were sitting with him, we looked across the fence into Aideen’s pasture and to our surprise- She was also limping!

Thankfully Wisconsin Dairy Veterinary Service was glad to help us out and take a look at them both, and even better, they came out on the same day we called!

Both Oskar and Aideen are on the mend, and so far 🤞 seem to be beginning to feel better.

It’s been a while since the vet has had to be out here, and we are immensely grateful for that, and even more grateful for such wonderful vets when we need them. ❤️

Tell us, have you ever seen happier pigs than these two? 😍

When we built this pasture we knew very little, but we knew that we wanted Leafi and Flower to be able to hang out by the pond if they wanted to. And they do want to! 😁

When Leafi was a younger pig she used to swim out of the pond and come visit us up in the yard. Thankfully, as with all creatures, lots of antics pass with time. And 4 years seems to be just the right amount of time!

We’ve been quiet because we’ve been busy. Life never slows when you have 70+ critters in your care.

There have been lots of special moments this season, and we always feel lucky to be a part of them.

Nothing brings friends together like a good watermelon, and today the special needs roosters are the ones partaking. 🙂

Nothing says “Spring is here to stay” like a handful of happy and breezy feeling sheared sheep. 🙂

No before pictures this year unfortunately, because we just didn’t have the time, but Nora looking like a dalmation without her heavy wool is always the silliest transformation.

We are so grateful to have W & W Livestock in our neighborhood, willing to spend a Saturday with us getting everybody freshened up. They also trimmed all the goat hooves this time around and it feels great to have two big jobs checked off of our to do list.

We have this space between pastures that we let go a little wild, and it makes us so happy to let the critters out here to graze this time of year. The grass in their own pasture is slower to start, so this treat holds them over until it’s ready. 😊

We’ve had lots of questions about whether there will be a Springtime Rendezvous this year, the answer is no. There is so much repair work and animal care catch up that we have put off in the name of “outreach” and getting our name out. Rather than burn out, we are turning inward and focusing on what it’s been about all along- Helping and caring for vulnerable farm animals.

We still love small group tours, just call or text and we’ll find a day. 😊 And events will be back in the picture in the coming months, just not today or tomorrow.

Watch for lots of updates about the ways we are improving the sanctuary for the animals who call it home, and showing how much we appreciate all of you who just keep on helping us make it happen. ❤️

Our favorite kind of rescue is the one where we can help out a critter by finding them a forever home, somewhere else. Yesterday was one of those days.

A few weeks ago we received a call that these 3 sweeties needed a new path forward, and we had just the home in mind.

We were told they had never swam before, and the happiest moment was yesterday when their new family told us that they were in their kiddy pool deep into the night. 😊

We get a LOT of calls, a lot of Facebook messages and tags on posts. If you have an open space on your peaceful farm, or in your home, please let us know and we will call you when we receive these messages. So often there is very little we can do, but when we can help critters on their journey to a forever home, we are so happy to do that. ❤️

Leafi knows all about storm prep.

She is especially serious about the part where she makes sure she doesn’t forget her favorite stick when she tucks into her dry bed for the evening. 😊
