The existence of well-founded mistrust is both a verdict and a call to action. It is a verdict on decades of poor institutional performance – a signal, as one analysis put it, that the “threads” of our social contract are fraying. The restoration of trust will require humility from institutions (to admit mistakes), courage to change entrenched practices, and engagement from the public to hold institutions to their promises.

Matt Rowe is a former elected city councilor and mayor of the city of Coquille, Oregon. He is also a former state chair of the Libertarian Party of Oregon and currently serves on their Executive Committee. Rep. Ed Diehl is a member of the Oregon House of Representatives. A staunch and consistent supporter of limited government, Diehl recently spearheaded a historic and wildly successful petition signature drive based on volunteers.

A series of transportation taxes enacted into law will now be referred to the November 2026 ballot. With only a few weeks to get about 78,000 valid signatures, over 191,000 were turned in. The validity rate turned out to be about 85%. Western Liberty Network provided training to a number of signature gatherers.

Candidates can't win by themselves. It is important to build a good campaign team. Learn how to build one at WLN's next Zoomcast at 1pm PDT on Sunday, April 6th!

WHAT IT IS ABOUT: In a well organized and healthy campaign, the candidate does little more than interact with voters, stays well-versed in relevant issues, and raises money. Most everything else should be done by a trusted campaign team in accordance with a written campaign plan. When candidates try to do everything, or attempt to micromanage their campaign teams, they are more likely to lose.
