PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE NEWS!!
This week's Community Resource Spotlight for the Homeless in Tift County is on our local Carl Vinson VA clinic here in Tifton. Georgia's homeless veterans population dropped from over 12% in 2014 to currently 4% due to the increased utilization by the homeless of such resources. Homeless veterans are offered an enormous amount of critical resources and services here in Tift county, as well as access to housing opportunities through the VA homeless programs. The local clinic was much needed, and many worked very hard to bring this invaluable resource and services to Tifton.

There is often great concern and compassion for individuals in need, but much less awareness about what is available for those we are concerned about and desiring to help. Where there may seem to be insufficient help or resources, there is often more than sufficient help and resources available if we lead them in the right direction, especially for the homeless population.

In order to help raise awareness of the large number of resources and services available within Tift county for those who may need them, we are going to be promoting them here on Facebook for our community over the next few weeks. There is often great concern and compassion for individuals in need, but much less awareness about what is available for those we are concerned about and desiring to help. Where there may seem to be insufficient help or resources, there is often more than sufficient help and resources available, especially to the homeless population. We are starting with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities provided by the state, due to the fact that many homeless individuals are impacted by substance abuse, mental illness, and/or other behavioral health conditions/issues. Below is a list of services provided through the DBHDD, accessed through our local Legacy Behavioral Health Clinic located at 334 Tifton Eldorado Road. Crisis intervention, mid-level care, nurses, doctors, and case management are provided on-site for diagnosis and services. These are at no cost/free for the indigent and are provided on a sliding fee scale for anyone else. Please help us share this information for the good and well being of all.

We are excited to announce that Brother Charlie's Thrift Store in Tifton will be getting a facelift soon! Thanks to Tifton Rental Center (Michael Yarbrough, Owner) and Pastor Jeff Abel of the Enigma Congregational Christian Church, our initial work/preparation began this week. Soon we will need volunteers to help paint our beautiful historic downtown building on Love Avenue. Our thrift stores support our important homeless shelter program, our community's efforts to end homelessness in our area, as well as supports those in need by providing extremely affordable household items. If you, or your group, are interested and willing to help us in this project please let us know. Contact our office at 229-382-0577, [email protected], or message us here on Facebook to volunteer.

From Homelessness to Independence

"I was born and raised in Philadelphia. For a long time, that was my home, but I moved to South Georgia near my family here. I lost everything because of my addiction and drug use. When I became homeless, I refused to live on the streets and came to Brother Charlie’s in May of 2022. After becoming a Christian and being baptized, I got my life together, had a steady job, and moved into subsidized housing. Although the apartment was affordable, I couldn’t afford to pay all my bills and live on my own for very long. So, I moved back into Brother Charlie’s in 20025. The first thing I did at Brother Charlie’s this time around was that I paid my driver’s license reinstatement fees and got my driver’s license back. I’ve had a good job for over a year now and saved my money according to Brother Charlie’s savings plan. This allowed me to purchase a good used car, pay all necessary deposits, and furnish my own place. Today, I’m thrilled to say I am on my own and have moved into an apartment again. This time I’m in a much better position, and I’ve learned a lot. I have continued to attend my addiction support group and church. I go to recovery to save my life and to church to save my soul. My relationships with my relatives, and especially my son, are great! I thank God for everything and Brother Charlie’s for all you have done for me.” – N. B.
