"The original complaint — lodged by the American Association of University Professors; its chapters at Harvard, Rutgers, and New York University; and the Middle East Studies Association — was filed days after immigration agents abducted Columbia University graduate and Palestinian organizer Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident who had recently obtained a green card.

Among its defendants is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has led the hunt for pro-Palestinian activists, including a campaign to scour social media for potential targets. The suit called such policies “unconstitutional” and argues that the repression has “created a climate of repression and fear on university campuses.”

"On March 25, as 30-year-old Tufts University Ph.D. student Rumeysa Ozturk left her home to meet friends and eat after a 13-hour Ramadan fast, she was handcuffed by masked, plain-clothed federal agents and forced into an unmarked SUV.

The abduction took place in broad daylight on a public street. Without warning, due process, or even the ability to contact a lawyer, Ozturk was taken to an undisclosed location.

It appears Ozturk was targeted because she co-authored an opinion editorial in the student newspaper a year ago calling on the university to divest from companies with ties to Israel because of the war in Gaza.

The Trump administration has revoked Ozturk’s visa, and she remains in custody on the path to deportation.

Freedom of the press is guaranteed by the U.S Constitution and must be fiercely protected by everyone who believes in the rule of law. No one who writes an op-ed should be arrested, detained, or deported for publishing their point of view.""
