George Landau had the pleasure of presenting the Police Capt. Dave Hutton Service Above Self Award at an awards assembly at Del Mar Middle School yesterday. Layla Patel was the winner for her outstanding accomplishments in community service, which ranged from tutoring younger children in her neighborhood to working in an art program at Reed Elementary School that paired middle schoolers with young children to volunteering at Make It Home, an organization that provides furniture and household goods for people who are transitioning out of homelessness.

Dave was a past-president of our club, and we created the award as a gift to him when he retired from the Tiburon Police Department. This year's award presentation fell on his birthday, and he would have been so proud. He passed away a couple of years ago, but he believed deeply in Service Above Self and the promise of young people, and it's our honor to continue the tradition.

Mark Freiberg, new president of the Belvedere Tiburon Landmarks Society, gave us a great talk on Tiburon's railroad history, and we gave him a check to support maintenance and preservation of iconic landmarks that the community treasures.

Congratulations to Hank McWhinney, our newest Paul Harris Fellow! Acting President Jon Rankin had the pleasure of presenting Hank with a certificate and pin. "You're the fastest one I've ever seen," said Jon. "Your $1,000 will go to help somebody. You can rest assured that your money is well spent when you donate to Rotary International."

Kudos to Sylvia Barry and her team for creating a stellar new event. At Rotary Epic Day of Service for Older Adults, Marin County’s elders had a chance to explore a wealth of resources at more than 20 displays while they snacked on donuts—courtesy of the Rotary Club of Ignacio—at Children’s Island at Marin Civic Center’s Lagoon Park.

Among the opportunities, they could check out a Tesla; discover opportunities for enrichment from ESCOM (Emeritus Students College of Marin); find out how to avoid becoming the victim of financial fraud from FAST (Financial Abuse Specialist Team), a service of Marin County Aging and Adult Services; meet District Attorney—and Rotarian—Lori Frugoli; and learn how to become part of a clinical trial in a Buck Institute for Research on Aging study on Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes (4youandme.org/beta).

As the event was winding down, Jeff Slavitz of the Rotary Club of Novato observed that good events become great as they age and was optimistic that Epic Day of Service would be back bigger and even better next year.

We had a big day on May 6. DG Mitone Griffiths inducted two new members; we honored Nathan Gribel as Rotary Educator of the Year; and Annette Venables gave us an update on Tribe Rising India, a Mill Valley nonprofit that built a school in India to give Dalit children an education and effect generational change in Gurap, a rural village in India. And our club foundation hosted a buffet lunch from Malibu Farm to celebrate our accomplishments.

District Governor Mitone Griffiths did us the honor of inducting two new members, Hawi Awash and Mark Dahm, at our last meeting. Mark got right into action by volunteering to help with the fifth-grade service project at Bel Aire Elementary School the next day!

Congratulations to Nathan Grebil, a fifth-grade teacher at Bel Aire Elementary School who is Rotary Educator of the Year for 2026.

“Mr. Grebil builds a family, builds a community, so kids will do everything for him,” said Reed Union School District Superintendent of Schools Kimberly McGrath, who is also a member of our club. She added that he also serves as a mentor for other teachers and makes connections with families. “He’s a perfect example of an Educator of the Year.”

President Kathleen Defever presented Mr. Grebil with an award and a check. “Thank you so much. When I heard about this award, it was special,” he said, explaining that it's Incredibly meaningful because his fellow teachers selected him.

We also presented a check to the Bel Aire PTA to underwrite the cost of supplies for a fifth-grade service project the next day. Students made sandwiches and assembled bag lunches with kindness notes for Ritter Center in San Rafael to distribute to unhoused individuals in an example of young people embracing the concept of Service Above Self.

The Book Exchange of Marin will host 2,500 students in 103 elementary and middle-school classes on literacy field trips this academic year. They'll give away 27,000 books, giving kids their own books to read at home, often for the first time. It makes a difference. According to the American Educational Research Association, children who can't read at grade level by third grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school by the time they're 19 than their better-off peers.

KUDOS TO THE BOOK EXCHANGE OF MARIN
When Rotarian Marilyn Nemzer held a book giveaway in her Tiburon driveway in 1987, it was a novel concept. Her plan was to take good used textbooks that teachers were no longer using and give them to other teachers who needed resources but didn’t have funding for them. The idea took off and evolved, and the Book Exchange has been giving free books to those who need them for close to 40 years.

Rotary has been involved since the early years. It’s perennially one of the Rotary Club of Tiburon-Belvedere’s most popular Avenues of Service, and the club sponsored the first shipment of books abroad when Gus Strotz was president in the 1990s. Today, the focus is on local Title 1 schools, and with Rotary support, children—some of whom have never owned a book of their own—get to visit on field trips and choose several books to take home.

This Wednesday, April 15, at 6 p.m., Rotary will host Sondra Lender of The Book Exchange of Marin at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library, where she will speak about the award-winning nonprofit. Want to attend and learn more? Register at https://www.beltiblibrary.org/event?id=16276825.
