a 53 gallon barrel of Rye whiskey was filled for the benefit of her future education. Instead of two parents, a network of people, who want to see kids in the community get the enrichment they deserve by providing opportunities to develop and be inspired by a personal connection to nature. This is also a chance to support valuable programs, such as the Dunes Learning Center and Camp Eberhart, that serve kids in your community. Because of the generosity of friends like you, we are able to continue to enhance the lives of the students and families we serve both socially and academically!

🍻 Islay’s Barrel 8th Annual Barrel-Aged Brewfest brings breweries and distillers from across the region to Journeyman Distillery. More than just a celebration of barrel-aged beer, this event fuels Islay’s Barrel Foundation, a nonprofit that provides youth in Southwest Michigan with access to summer camps and enrichment programs.

What started in 2012 as a single barrel set aside for our daughter’s future has grown into a foundation helping kids discover theirs.

Our Story

Islay's Barrel is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to extend summer enrichment opportunities to Southwest Michigan children in need.

The organization was founded in 2012 by Journeyman Distillery proprietors Johanna and Bill Welter and named for their young daughter, Islay. Shortly after Isaly’s birth, Johanna and Bill filled a 53 gallon barrel of Rye Whiskey was filled for the benefit of her future education. Their nonprofit, Islay's Barrel, seeks to extend that concept into the community, empowering a network of people to have a positive impact on the lives of local kids.

In addition to improving the lives of local kids, your donation supports valuable programs including Dunes Learning Center and Camp Eberhart. Because of the generosity of friends like you, we are able to continue to enhance the lives of the students and families we serve!
