In Loving Memory of Priscilla Hellenga (1947–2026) 🎶

It is with heavy hearts that we remember and honor Priscilla Hellenga, the founding Executive Director of the School of American Music, who passed away on October 18, 2026, at the age of 79.

Priscilla played an instrumental role in establishing SAM and helping shape the organization we know and love today. For more than a decade, she dedicated her time, talents, and passion for music to building a place where music education could flourish and enrich the lives of others.

From coordinating concerts and connecting students with teachers to securing scholarships, writing grants, teaching lessons, and making music herself, Priscilla's contributions were both numerous and deeply meaningful. Her commitment to music education and her community helped lay the foundation for SAM's enduring mission.

Those who had the privilege of working alongside Priscilla remember her as a kind, conscientious, and exceptionally organized woman, a talented musician, and a wonderful source of Three Oaks history. Above all, she will be remembered for her gentle spirit, generosity, and genuine love for people and music.

Priscilla's legacy lives on in every student who discovers the joy of music, every scholarship that opens a door, and every performance that brings our community together.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Priscilla's family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.

Her contributions to the School of American Music will forever be a blessing and an important part of our history. We are profoundly grateful for the foundation she helped build and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.

Rest in peace, Priscilla. Your music, kindness, and spirit will always be part of SAM. ❤️🎶

🎶 Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🎶

Today, we celebrate the incredible teachers who inspire curiosity, build confidence, and help young people discover what they’re capable of.

At the School of American Music, we are especially grateful for our amazing private music instructors. They do so much more than teach notes, rhythms and technique. They encourage creativity, celebrate progress, build confidence, and help students discover a lifelong love of music. ❤️

And today, we extend our gratitude to all teachers - in our schools, studios, and throughout our community - who show up each day ready to encourage, challenge, and inspire the next generation.

To our SAM teachers and educators everywhere: thank you for all you do to help our children learn, grow, and find their voice.

Happy !

It’s Kids Music Day!

Students at the School of American Music got into the rhythm this week with the Challenge!

Our students had fun learning how to count notes, explore rhythm, and create beats using a variety of drums and percussion styles. Because sometimes the best way to learn music is to make a little noise! 🥁. The students got the rhythm going in both the Donna Mitchell studio and the Denise Vanden Bussche studio this week! Thanks to both instructors for supporting Kids Music Day!

SAM is proud to support and join music schools and organizations around the country in celebrating Kids Music Day and the joy, creativity, confidence, and connection that music brings to young people.

Keep learning. Keep playing. And keep drumming on anything!

DRUM ON ANYTHING!

This Friday, October 2, SAM is joining Keep Music Alive’s 11th Annual Kids Music Day with the Challenge, and we want YOU to join the fun!

Grab some drumsticks, wooden spoons, or just your hands, and find something to drum on! Pots and pans, buckets, boxes, tabletops...if you can tap it, bang it, or beat out a rhythm on it, it counts!

Here’s how to join: Film your kiddos and their friends drumming on ANYTHING, post your video on social media using , and be sure to tag so we can see and share your creativity! Post on or before October 2, and we will celebrate the music on Kids Music Day - Friday, October 2, 2026.

You don’t have to be a musician. You don’t need a drum set. You just need a little imagination and a beat.

Let’s see how much noise Harbor Country can make!

🥁 Make Music. Share Your Creativity. Keep Music Alive!

🎶 The hills were alive with the sound of music yesterday!

The River Valley Singers (The River Valley Senior Center Choir), brought a little Broadway magic to Woodland Terrace Senior Living in Bridgman with a special The Sound of Music Sing-Along!

Eleven choir members helped to lead the music, with 17 Woodland Terrace residents and staff joining in the fun. There were plenty of familiar songs, smiling faces, and voices raised together. It was a wonderful reminder of the joy and connection that music can bring to our community. 🎵

A big thank you to Tom Fischer, our choir director and pianist; Curtiss Alvarez, who kept things moving as emcee; and all of our River Valley Singers who served as enthusiastic song leaders.

We’re also grateful to Woodland Terrace for welcoming us, the River Valley Senior Center for making the choir possible, and the School of American Music for its continued support of this special community music program.

What a wonderful afternoon of music, memories, and community!
