E-bike safety continues to be a concern for many Oak Park residents. The Oak Park MAC has heard concerns from community members about unsafe riding, excessive speeds, and near misses on our streets, trails, and around schools and parks.
To help address these concerns, Supervisor Jeff Gorell recently brought forward a measure directing staff to work with stakeholders—including schools, park agencies, law enforcement, community organizations, and others—to explore policies, education, and coordinated programs that can improve safety throughout Ventura County.
It's also important for parents to understand the law. In some California communities, parents have faced legal consequences for the actions of their children while operating e-bikes and other motorized vehicles. Most importantly, talk with your children about riding safely, following the rules of the road, wearing helmets, respecting neighbors, and being courteous to pedestrians.
Rancho Simi Rec and Park District is exploring ways to limit access to bike jumps that are located in the Medea Creek area to make it safer for those using the walking path and to protect the habitat in the area.
When it comes to illegal or unsafe riding, residents in Oak Park should contact the California Highway Patrol. For non-emergency concerns, call 1-800-835-5247. If there is an immediate danger or emergency, call 911.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Office will also provide information about e-bike safety at the next MAC Meeting taking place on June 25 at 7 pm at Oak Park High School.
