Rudbeckias look just like sunshine! Also known as Black Eyed Susans, they are a hardy perennial wildflower that are blooming now the Pollinator Garden. They attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Plus they are lovely in cut flower arrangements.

Nasturtiums are a wonderful companion plant! In January, Carol joined the Community Garden, where she inherited a couple of green bean plants, a cherry tomato, and arugula in her garden. She planted zucchini seeds in February and has already harvested over 30 squashes! She has several tomato varieties, basil, and cauliflower growing. One of her joys in life is to share her produce with neighbors, family, and friends!

One Spark Academy’s Monarch Butterfly Garden is filled with blooming native narrow leaf milkweed! This is the only source of food and shelter for the caterpillar of the Monarch Butterfly. Several Monarch caterpillars have been spotted! The caterpillar will create a button of silk on a branch, the underside of a sturdy leaf, or other sheltered surfaces where it hangs upside down in a “J Hook” to make its chrysalis, where it stays for several days before emerging as a butterfly.

Barry had mounted one Community Garden Owl Box last November with a WiFi camera and now has the second state of the art Barn Owl Nesting Box up near his garden. The old, always vacant, box had been facing the wrong direction for 15 years! His garden is abundantly growing strawberries, cucumber pickles, tomatoes, kale, and peppers.

In the new Community Garden Owl Box, two baby Barn Owls are growing quickly with two or three feedings a night of mice, rabbit, rat, or gopher! The owlets are giant pr***en cotton balls. When not waiting for a meal, they generally spend their time grooming, flapping, napping, and posing.
