Securing the Death Gamble Bill as law is something I am incredibly proud of — a victory that will protect WCOBA members now and well into the future. While it officially became law on May 3rd, 2023 as Chapter 55 of the Laws of 2023, today I finally received the signed copy from the Governor’s Office, making this moment feel even more meaningful.

My deepest gratitude goes to our sponsors NYS Senator Robert Jackson and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato for championing this legislation, as well as our Westchester County co-sponsors — Senators Peter Harckham & Shelley Mayer, and Assembly Members Amy Paulin & Nader Sayegh — for their leadership and support.

Thank you also to then–County Executive George Latimer, current County Executive Ken Jenkins and the entire Westchester County Board of Legislators for granting Home Rule approval, which made this possible.

“Thank you much to Westchester County Legislators Tyrae Woodson-Samuels, James Nolan, David Tubiolo, and Margaret Cunzio for sending the following Letter of Support to Reform the HALT Act. It’s refreshing to see these 4 of the 17 legislators act in a bipartisan manner to protect our members, civilian staff, as well as the inmate population. I must say I’m disappointed that this was not signed on by the entire board!”
