A huge thank you to Mad River Coffee Roasters for helping fuel opening weekend at the new parking lot with a generous coffee donation ☕️

As many climbers already know, Mad River is a local favorite conveniently located right off Exit 28 in Campton, making it the perfect stop on the way to or from the crag. Whether you’re gearing up for a day at Russell Crags, Y Crag, Schist Creek, or Storybrooke, or winding down after a long day climbing, they’ve got great coffee, delicious food, and baked goods to keep you going.

They’re open daily from 6am–6pm, so be sure to stop in and support a business that continues to support the climbing community.

We’re incredibly grateful for the local partnerships and community support that helped make this project and opening weekend such a success.

New Tripoli Road parking lot etiquette

If you’re heading out to Merriam Woods (Russell Crags), Russell Forest, or Storybrooke and plan to use the new lot, here’s how we can all do our part:

• Follow Leave No Trace — pack in, pack out, including human waste
• Stay on established footpaths to help prevent erosion and avoid additional damage to the surrounding area
• If the lot is full, please park at the gate or have a backup plan (no overflow parking)
• Do not park along the entrance of the lot or on Tripoli Road
• Be respectful of nearby private landowners and their property

This lot exists because of the community. How we use it now determines whether it stays available in the future.

If you’re planning to park here, please consider making a donation to support ongoing access, maintenance, and future projects. Every contribution helps protect the places we all care about.

The wait is finally over!

After 3 years of planning, fundraising, hard work, and community support, the CNHCA parking lot is officially scheduled to open on Saturday, May 23rd at 9:00 AM.

This new parking area will provide access to:

🧗 Merriam Woods (Russell Crags)
🧗 Y Crag
🧗 Schist Creek
🧗 Storybrooke

This project would not have been possible without the incredible support from our community, donors, volunteers, and partners. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen so climbers can responsibly enjoy and access these incredible areas for years to come.

We cannot wait to see you out there. Stay tuned for additional details and parking guidelines before opening day!

This past week, the Secretary of CNHCA headed down to the New River Gorge for the Access Fund Climbing Advocacy Conference.

She sat in on a variety of sessions covering the real issues facing local climbing areas and organizations—from access and conservation to keeping climbing spaces sustainable for the long run.

One of the best parts? Connecting with climbers and advocates from all over the country, swapping ideas and learning how different communities are tackling similar challenges.

We’re looking forward to bringing those insights back to Central NH and continuing the work to protect and improve climbing access for everyone.

Check out the CNHCA blog: Central New Hampshire Climbing History 🧗‍♂️

Before the crowds, before the guidebooks, and before modern hardware, climbers were bushwhacking into the hills, hand-drilling bolts, and discovering the king lines that helped shape our local scene. This piece looks back at the legends, first ascents, and hidden crags that built climbing in Central New Hampshire.

If you climb here now, it’s worth knowing who came before you...and where we are headed.
