If you have signed our online petition, please check your email for an important request to contact state and federal legislators about the lower Pool 13 pelican and habitat project issue. This is a direct outcome of the August 3 Pool 13 Listening Session with the Iowa DNR, USFWS and Iowa State Senator Chris Cournoyer. Thank you for the help!

U.S. Rep. Thank you to all who attended the Pool 13 Listening Session last week. Many of you have asked about the outcome of the meeting. It was an important first step to address the pelican issue as well as the lack of overwintering habitat on the lower part of Pool 13. Already today, Adam Crigger took Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, State Senator Chris Cournoyer, and staffers Joe and Rachael on a tour of lower Pool 13 to see the eye-popping amount of white pelicans as well as the scarcity of deep-water overwintering habitat for fish species that require it for survival from year to year. Senator Cournoyer was impressed with the turnout at the meeting and both will continue to elevate these issues through appropriate channels. Thank you to Adam for the tour as well as the government officials for their interest and support. We will be sending more information to those who have signed the petition in the near future.

Ours is not a "kill all the pelicans" movement. It is a request for research and potential management. As Bob Bluett, wildlife biologist said in a 2012 Chicago Tribune article about an Illinois river otter trapping season:

"...if you put it into the same context as deer and Canada goose, everybody enjoys seeing these animals, but you know there's a limit. There are ranges on each side of the healthy range. We've seen one side (too few). Now we want to avoid going to the other side."
