Patrol Base Abbate

Patrol Base Abbate Veteran retreat Patrol Base Abbate is a place as wild and free as its namesake. As veterans, we are called to serve and seek to sacrifice.

The PB is a location for veterans to rest and refit inside the wire; and, then get back in the fight and serve their families and communities. While it’s important that we carve out a space for veterans, we want to make sure that we equip those who served with the right tools to get back in the fight. We believe in the outdoors, physical activity, and that a tribe and purpose are the essential el

ements for a warrior’s mind and soul. PB Abbate affords us an opportunity to continue that calling. We intend to continually improve our position and ourselves, so grab your e-tool and get ready to fill a sandbag as we come together as a community to build a place where all veterans can rally.

A successful Fight Club Return To Base program in the books. Veterans came together at the Patrol Base in Thompson Falls, Montana, united by a shared interest in BJJ and Muay Thai but left with something far more meaningful.

Between hard training sessions, time in the Montana outdoors, meaningful service, and evenings spent around the campfire sharing open, honest, and vulnerable conversations, strangers became a community.

We’re grateful to every participant, coach, volunteer, and supporter who made the week possible and, most of all, to the veterans who trusted PBA, embraced the discomfort, and took the chance to reconnect. Another group leaving the Patrol Base with a renewed sense of community, connection, and purpose!

Patrol Base Abbate was honored to host a Women’s Return To Base with the Athena Foundation, bringing together 17 women who have served, to step away from the demands of everyday life and intentionally rediscover community, connection, and purpose.

This RTB brought together PBA’s premier Return To Base programming with leadership coaching through Cairn Leadership and the Athena Foundation. Participants explored leadership, culture building, personal and organizational values, and emotional intelligence, creating space not only to reconnect with one another, but to better understand themselves and the leaders they want to become.

The week was also filled with time to simply be together and experience Montana; kayaking and paddleboarding, swimming, sunrise coffee and conversations, and a true Return To Base hiking experience through the breathtaking northwest Montana landscape ending at the Patrol Base for sunrise.

But, as with every RTB, some of the most meaningful moments happened between the scheduled activities.

At sunrise. On the water. Along the trail. Around the table. And in the conversations that continued long after the day's activities ended.

Seventeen women arrived with different stories, backgrounds, experiences, and reasons for serving. They left with new relationships, renewed perspective, and a deeper sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves.

A tremendous thank you to the Athena Foundation and Cairn Leadership for bringing your expertise, energy, and shared commitment to serving women veterans into the Return To Base experience. When organizations align around the belief that veterans deserve meaningful opportunities to reconnect, grow, and rediscover purpose, the impact is powerful.

And to the 17 women who took the chance, made the journey, embraced the uncertainty, and trusted PBA, the Athena Foundation, and Cairn Leadership, thank you for showing up for yourselves and for one another.

You came to rediscover. You came to reconnect. You came to recalibrate.

And you left with a little more community, a little more connection, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Patrol Base Abbate was honored to host our Vet +1 Spouse Return To Base (RTB) in Thompson Falls, Montana, in partnership with the Big Fish Foundation. Built on a shared belief that strong relationships are foundational to veteran well-being, our organizations came together to create an experience where veterans and their partners could step away from the demands of everyday life to intentionally invest in their relationships, to rediscover, reconnect, and recalibrate as partners.

Our participants represented every stage of life and military service: couples who served through military careers together, couples who met after service, dual-military spouses, and newly engaged couples. While every story was unique, they all arrived with the same goal, to become stronger together.

Throughout the week, couples challenged themselves through partner workouts led by the Big Fish Foundation, daily yoga taught by Isabel Meijering, swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding against Montana's breathtaking backdrop. They also participated in world-class resilience workshops, including communication and stress management sessions with Ben O'Brien and breathwork and nervous system regulation training with Kai Cook, both on and off the water.

Every day was fueled by incredible meals prepared by Lesa and Kirby Kirkconnell, assisted by Augie and Nancy Olivo, creating opportunities to gather, connect, and build community.

As with every Return To Base, the greatest transformation happened between the scheduled events. Around campfires, during meals, and in quiet conversations, walls came down. Vulnerability replaced isolation, and encouragement replaced uncertainty.

To every participant, volunteer, coach, and our partners at the Big Fish Foundation: thank you all for trusting the process, embracing the discomfort, and making the journey to Montana. Your willingness to drop your packs behind friendly lines is what makes these experiences so meaningful.

Together, we're proving that when veterans and their partners reconnect with one another, they return home stronger, better equipped to serve their families, communities, and themselves.

Another successful 2026 Return To Base (RTB) program is in the books!

Patrol Base Abbate's Fly Fishing Club Return To Base (RTB) brought together 29 participants who embraced every challenge the river threw their way. Through the rain and difficult conditions, they persevered, landed some beautiful fish, and discovered that the experience was about much more than what was at the end of the line.

Each day began with yoga and mindfulness practices that encouraged participants to slow down, be present, and reconnect with themselves. They shared incredible meals, completed a meaningful service project that included cleaning up the river that had given us so much throughout the week, and spent long evenings gathered. As always, the most impactful moments came in those nightly conversations. Veterans got open, vulnerable, and honest with one another, sharing stories, struggles, and victories. Strangers became friends, and friends became family.

A special thank you to the dedicated leaders of our Fly Fishing Club who continue to create opportunities for veterans to heal, connect, and find purpose through shared experiences in nature.

And to the 29 participants who trusted the process and said "yes" to this experience, thank you for your willingness to show up, embrace the discomfort, and invest in one another. The fish were a bonus. The real catch was the renewed sense of community, connection, and purpose that each veteran was able to take home.

Together, we continue to build a community where veterans can rediscover the connection, purpose, and sense of belonging that many miss after service. We arrived as individuals from different backgrounds and experiences, but we left as something stronger, a tribe.

We look forward to our next RTB, Vet+1 (Spouse), partnered with the Big Fish Foundation, will take place at the Patrol Base in Thompson Falls, MT.

Another successful Return To Base (RTB) is in the books.

This past week, members of Patrol Base Abbate’s Book Club gathered for an immersive RTB centered around the novel Glorious Exploits. Through thoughtful discussions of the book’s themes, engaging workshops, daily yoga and meditation, paddleboarding and kayaking adventures, and a service project, participants found countless opportunities to reconnect, with themselves and with one another.

As always, some of the most impactful moments happened around the campfire. Night after night, veterans shared deep, open, and vulnerable conversations that stretched late into the evening, strengthening bonds of trust, understanding, and community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated leaders of our Book Club, whose commitment and service have helped shape this community since the earliest days of Patrol Base Abbate. Your passion, leadership, and unwavering support continue to create meaningful opportunities for veterans to connect and grow.

To every participant who took a chance on this experience and placed their faith in Patrol Base Abbate, thank you! Your willingness to show up, engage, and be vulnerable is what makes these programs so powerful.
