510 Young Street was constructed in 1891 as a vernacular-styled Victorian cottage. The house was badly damaged at the time of Mr. Maglebyโs purchase โ he notes a heavily damaged roof, extensive interior water damage, and ceilings which had been lowered from their original 10โ height.
While many would have seen building demolition as the path forward, Mr. Magleby insisted that original doors, windows, flooring be retained and repaired. Retention of hallway transoms and appropriate repairs to the houseโs ceilings, protected the buildingโs period-specific height and architectural volume, ensuring that the houseโs interior 1891 design remains unbroken.
In addition to the work completed on 510 Young Street, Mr. Magleby also purchased and rehabilitated the neighboring 512 Young, a c.1920s residence located on an adjacent lot. Incorporating the same principles which guided rehabilitation of his own home, Mr. Magleby invested in 512, returning a once threatened property to lively residential use.
Thank you, Craig Magleby, for investing in Thomasvilleโs past and future.
