Today's post comes from our intern :

Hi all! Saturday I conducted a Bluebird Survey at Birdsong Nature Center along with David Jones. There are 43 bluebird boxes scattered around Birdsong, and today we visited around 20 of them. The other bluebird volunteer, Myles, visited the rest. These surveys help us keep an eye on the bluebird boxes and check if there's any activity happening inside. David conducts these surveys every 2 weeks. This morning we observed tons of new activity that's happened since the last survey such as, newly-laid eggs and hatchlings! Most of the boxes are inhabitated by Eastern Bluebirds, but other species have also been known to share these boxes such as the Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee and White-breasted Nuthatch! -Rachel Alexander

Happy National Trails Day! 🥾
Trails are more than just paths through the woods - they’re ways to explore, learn, and connect with the natural world.
Many of our favorite Conservation Pathways experiences have started with a walk down a trail, leading us to new discoveries, unforgettable field experiences, and a deeper appreciation for our environment.
Get outside today, hit the trails, and celebrate the places that bring us adventure!

This photo dump comes from Cora and Maddie about our time helping Learning Systems Institute Amanda Tazaz's with a GeoScience Camp for Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend.

This week, our interns have been helping lead hands-on water cycle activities with campers before heading out to Leon Sinks Geological Area and Wakulla Springs State Park to see these concepts in action!
The Florida Geological Survey guided campers on a tour exploring how the area’s limestone geology helped create the unique sinkholes and springs that make this region so special.
From experiments to sinkholes to springs, it's been an exciting week of exploration and discovery! Make sure you stay tuned to see what our interns get up to during Week 2 of camp!

Last week we began preparing for a geoScience camp for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Bend that we will be helping with the first two weeks of June. Amanda Tazaz of Learning Systems Institute will be directing the camp and our interns will be helping with in-center activities as well as field trips.

Understanding where we live, the vulnerability of our aquifer, and the impact of our actions upstream is so important for college students that temporarily live here, as well as all of us that are more permanent community members.

Our interns got to experience environmental education at its finest with FSU Prof Todd Bevis of the Office of STEM Teaching Activities (OSTA) at Eureka, Science night...and they clearly had a great time!

From Maddie:
We learned about scientific explanations and the importance of providing claim evidence and reasoning in daily conversations to continue to test and expand your knowledge. We did a little science experiment where we combined all the materials on the table and had to explain why/if a new substance was made.

Sometimes seeing a place for the first time makes a big impact on our students. This post about our trip to Birdsong last week comes from Kaniah:

Visiting Birdsong felt like a breath of fresh air. There’s something grounding about being surrounded by nature and seeing how much care goes into protecting wildlife. It reminded me to slow down, pay attention, and appreciate the beauty that’s right in front of me.

Kicked off the summer exploring the unique ecology of North Florida with a hike through the Munson Sandhills...our favorite way to start off our internship program! We spent the morning talking about species like gopher tortoises, red-cockaded woodpeckers, green treefrogs, butterfly pea, smilax (and eating), low bush blueberries (not ready to eat), milkweed, and so many more.

Today's post and artwork comes from our communication major intern Cora Everly. It's going to be a great summer!

We had a great time putting on our first ever Pathways to Conservation Careers workshop for teens this weekend ! It was our summer interns first event and they jumped right in and shared about their pathways to college too. Looking forward to putting on this program more in the future.
