We're sorry to announce that the Del Suggs concert scheduled for Saturday, October 10th, has been canceled due to expected bad weather. 🌿 We hope you can come out soon to see the Gin House Field full of Agalinis and other wonderful fall wildflowers. The last two days it has been spectacular, with pink flowers everywhere and lots of bees, Yellow Sulphurs, Common Buckeye, and Gulf Fritillary butterflies.
🌿 We are not sure what the impact of the predicted rains may be, but it is beautiful and surprising all along the central trail right now and we hope you'll have a chance to come by and enjoy this phenomenon while it happens.
🌿 Our hours of operation are: Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 9 to 5 and Sunday 1 to 5.

Please join us on Saturday, October 10, 4:30pm, for a 40th Anniversary benefit concert by beloved local musician Del Suggs! Tickets $25 at birdsongnaturecenter.org or call Birdsong at 229-377-4408. Gate opens 4:30pm, music at 5:30pm. Wharf Seafood and SOCO Smokehouse food truck dinners, b**r, w**e, other beverages available for purchase. Bring lawn chair or blanket if you like. 🌿 We have been watching for several weeks for the emergence of the annual Agalinis bloom. We saw the first flowers here and there over a week ago and thought it might take the bloom a while to fully appear, but as of today the Gin House Field is exploding with pink flowers! The blooms are covering the entire western expanse of the field, both north and south sides of the central trail. This is one of the best years we've had in a while, so we invite you to come out to see this beautiful sight! If you love to take nature photographs, you do not want to miss this opportunity.
🌿 Scott Ball has taken some wonderful photos, not just of the Agalinis, but also the butterflies and bees and other insects that are enjoying the flowers right now. Other colorful wildflowers like Liatris and goldenrod are emerging too and attracting the pollinators.
🌿 Our hours of operation are: Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 9am to 5pm; Sunday, 1 to 5 pm.
🌿 We don't know how long the bloom will last - possibly another week or so, maybe longer. We didn't realize that it would hit all at once this year, so the sudden full flowering was a little unexpected.
🌿 Please come soon and walk out to the Gin House Field and enjoy this phenomenon while it lasts.
🌿 On Saturday, October 3rd we will also be having our volunteer workday to remove invasives from the Holly Woods from 9am to 11am. If you can join us, we'll work on the invasives and then all go have a look at the flowering field!

Del has graciously offered to play his signature saltwater music for us at an outdoor fundraising event on the evening of Saturday, October 10 here at Birdsong. For those old friends who are familiar with Del’s music, you know what a nice evening we have in store.

🌿 Please join us Sat., 9/26, 8-10AM for an EARLY FALL BIRD WALK at Birdsong with volunteer leaders Charlie and Cindy Baisden.
🌿 We will visit a variety of habitats, such as the old field/pond edge by the Farm Pond, and mixed pine and hardwood forest along the north side of Big Bay Swamp. Our goal will be to spot migrating species heading south and returning winter residents such as Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and various wood warblers, vireos, and sparrows. At the conclusion of the walk, we will want to visit the Bird Window, offering an opportunity to observe up close some of the species we observed during the walk.
🌿The program should run about 2 hours, and we will probably walk about 1.5 to 2.0 miles. If you are interested in learning about fall migrants that are common to South Georgia and North Florida, please join us on September 26th.
🌿 Dress for the weather, bring sun protection, and prepare for a walk through the woods and fields of Birdsong. You may want to bring water, field guides, and insect repellant with you.
🌿 $8 Friends, $10 nonmembers, children half-price. RESERVATIONS, PLEASE. Call by noon on Friday, September 25th to reserve your space. 🐦

🌿 Please join us for GOPHER TORTOISE FIELD DAY, Saturday, September 19, 10am-Noon at Birdsong!
🌿 The gopher tortoise plays a significant ecological role in longleaf pine and sandhill communities in the southeast. It is classified as a threatened species in the states of Georgia and Florida and is listed as Threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. At Birdsong we are fortunate to have active gopher tortoise burrows quite close to our trails where they can be easily observed.
🌿 Lora Smith, Ph.D., is a Scientist at Jones Center at Ichauway in Newton, Georgia. She is researching the effects of mammalian predation on gopher tortoises and conducts additional research on upland snake ecology and pond-breeding amphibians. She has provided excellent tortoise programs at Birdsong for many years as a representative of the Gopher Tortoise Council.
🌿 Lora will offer an informative power point presentation on the gopher tortoise’s life history and ecology. Our group will then ride out in the field to locate several of our tortoise burrows. Lora will bring her special camera that can be inserted into the burrows so we may be able to see a tortoise inside its burrow, which is always fascinating!
🌿 $12 Friends, $14 non-members. RESERVATIONS, PLEASE. This program is geared for adults and children four years and older. Call 229-377-4408 or email [email protected] by noon on Friday, September 18th, to reserve a space on the trailer and learn how you and your family can help protect gopher tortoise habitat near you. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch if you wish to stay after the program. 🐦
