HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Today we celebrate 61 years of the incredible impact of Head Start — a program that has transformed the lives of millions of children, families, and communities across our nation.
For more than six decades, Head Start has provided far more than early education. It has opened doors of opportunity, created pathways to success, and strengthened families from the inside out. Through high-quality early learning, health services, nutrition support, family engagement, and comprehensive care, Head Start continues to ensure that every child — regardless of zip code or circumstance — has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

The impact of Head Start can be seen every day:
* Children entering kindergarten confident, prepared, and ready to succeed
*Families gaining access to resources, support systems, and leadership opportunities
*Parents becoming advocates, volunteers, educators, and community leaders
*Communities growing stronger through investments in children and families
*Generations breaking cycles of poverty through education, empowerment, and hope
*Head Start has always believed that families are a child’s first and most important teacher. That philosophy continues to shape stronger homes, healthier children, and brighter futures throughout America.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate the dedicated teachers, family advocates, bus drivers, nutrition staff, health teams, administrators, and community partners who pour their hearts into this work every single day. Their commitment changes lives in ways that often cannot be measured.

For 61 years, Head Start has stood as a promise — that every child deserves dignity, opportunity, and a strong beginning.
Happy 61st Birthday, Head Start! Your legacy continues to inspire hope, transform futures, and strengthen our nation one child and one family at a time.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today announced a child care reform package to lower costs, expand access, and better serve families who rely on federally-funded child care programs. The package advances President Trump’s pro-family agenda by cutting red tape, restoring state flexibility, protecting taxpayer dollars, and opening the door to more child care options tailored to the needs and preferences of American families.

Today, dedicated staff from across North Carolina Head Start programs took part in “Meet Your Legislator Day” at the General Assembly—lifting up the voices of children, families, and early childhood educators from every corner of our state.
Our team met with legislators to talk about the critical need for a child care subsidy rate floor—a solution that helps ensure all providers, especially those in rural communities, receive fair and sustainable funding. Right now, too many programs are operating under rates that simply don’t cover the true cost of care. That puts classrooms, staff, and access for working families at risk.
Head Start staff shared real stories from their communities—stories of dedicated teachers, resilient families, and the everyday impact of underfunded child care. They also highlighted how a subsidy floor can:
✔️ Support competitive wages for early educators
✔️ Stabilize child care programs and prevent closures
✔️ Eliminate the “rural penalty”
✔️ Ensure all children—no matter their zip code—have access to high-quality care
A big shout out to Blue Ridge Community Action, Regional Consolidated Services, Generation ED, Verner, and McDowell BOE for participating. Everyone did a great job sharing stories, talking about subsidy, and highlighting the importance of creating a strong, sustainable floor for child care funding.
We are proud to stand together in advocating for policies that strengthen early childhood systems across North Carolina. When we invest in child care, we invest in our workforce, our economy, and our future.

We also had a couple of surprises! Liberty Llama was out by the lawn and Brandi and Christa fell in love with Liberty. We also had a surprise visitor at lunch so it turned out to be "The BEST DAY EVER!! " Thanks Pat for surprising us!

The months-long impasse over Medicaid funding came to an end on Thursday. Democratic Gov. Josh Stein moved quickly, signing the bill into law just two days after it received final bipartisan approval from the GOP-led House and Senate.

“There’s probably over half the people in this room who wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for someone who had child care at home that you could leave your children with,” said Rep. Larry Potts, R-Davidson, a co-chair of the committee. “When less and less people show up to work because there’s less and less slots available, I’m sure it’ll start becoming more important then.”

Early childcare advocates all across the state are working to change the subisdy rate in order to help childcare centers all across our state.

We must do better!
