Rotary Club of Thomaston was happy to have teachers, Eileen Stowe and James Newton as well as a few students speaking about a new Farm-to-Table program at Thomaston High School this year. Our club was able to give a community Grant this year to assist with the purchase of their green house.

Twenty-seven Rotary Clubs in northern CT and Western MA (Rotary District 7890) have joined together to fund a project that will bring fresh drinking water, sanitation facilities and hygiene training to a needy Mayan community in Guatemala. Including matching funds from The Rotary Foundation and those contributed to ALDEA, the Cooperating Partner NGO, a total of $204,605 was raised this year.

These funds will pay for the materials needed to complete a gravity fed water system with gray water filters, vented pit latrines, improved fuel-efficient vented stoves for the 120 families (1,499 people) who live in the rural community of El Rosario, Guatemala. All labor will be provided by the men and women in the village. This project continues the goal of Rotary International to have every Rotary Club support an international water and sanitation project every year. By working together, pooling their resources, and obtaining Global Grants with matching funds from The Rotary Foundation, the Rotarians have been successful in adding size and strength to their chosen projects.

This ongoing project for several communities in Guatemala have resulted in some amazing accomplishments:

- 31 COMPLETED VILLAGES, ALL SELF SUSTAINING

- 3,639 FAMILIES; PROVIDING OVER 22,397 PEOPLE WITH CLEAN WATER & SANITATION FACILITIES AND HYGIENE TRAINING

- 14 GLOBAL GRANTS COMPLETED; 15th UNDER CONSTRUCTION (EL ROSARIO)

- 5 VILLAGES WITH SOLAR-POWERED PUMPING SYSTEMS

- OVER $2,257,791 RAISED FOR THESE PROJECTS

GREAT RESULTS WITHIN ONE YEAR AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION:
- 60% Reduction in Intestinal Diseases & Diarrhea
- 60% Reduction in Eye Infections, Respiratory Illness & Burns
- 10% Reduction in Childhood Malnutrition EACH year
- Increased School Attendance, Especially for Girls
- Increased empowerment for women; higher self-esteem, more time to weave, sew and create handicrafts that can be sold in the local markets, allowing women to have a voice in household
expenditures and decisions.
