The Thomaston Historical Society is an active group with many offerings including meetings with interesting guest speakers that are open to the public free of charge; a long list of publications in which they have been involved by either publishing or supplying the historic material for their writing; celebrating the birthday of General Henry Knox each July in cooperation with The General Henry K
nox Museum; opening one of the many historic houses in Thomaston for two days of public viewing during the month of December called "Home for the Holidays" and running a very interesting museum where one can learn the history of the town beginning with the first exploration by an Englishman in 1605. There are extensive archives for research of local families, events and businesses, war records, many photographs and paintings, maps and memorabilia dating back to the Colonial era. The museum is currently closed however you can make an appointment at any time throughout the year. To make an appointment please call either (207) 354-2314 or (207) 354-4121. To leave a message or to speak with someone during museum hours, please call (207) 354-2295. Admission to the museum is free and there is always someone in attendance to answer your questions and show you around the facility. Please make sure to visit our book and gift shop while you are there. The building is handicapped accessible with a ramp for entering the first floor meeting room and a chair lift to the second story of the museum. The location of the Farmhouse is at 80 Knox Street. Knox Street begins in the center of town where the traffic light is located at intersection of Main (U.S. Route 1) and Knox Streets. Route 1, which is a north/south road, happens to run due east/west through the center of town. At the light, turn south and head towards the river. When you get to the railroad tracks, stop, look to your left. The society's building is visible at that point, part way up the gravel road.
