weridetogether.today ALL SPORTS, ONE GOAL:
We hear you. We stand with you. . A movement for change committed to ending sexual misconduct in all sports! Sure.

There’s a shift happening in the world right now. From the Olympic down to the club level, we can no longer feign ignorance about the prevalence of sexual abuse in sport, and the resounding impact it can have on the lives of survivors. Horse sport is no exception. Studies show that athletes are among the most susceptible to abuse—an astounding 40 to 50 percent will have experienced anything from

mild sexual harassment to severe sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. The true number is likely higher, says child protection advocate Les Nichols. In equestrian sport, it almost certainly is. Abuse is more prevalent in sports where participants are predominantly female and working one-on-one with a trainer—as is the norm in horse sports. The fact that equestrian athletes most often compete as individuals, not as teammates, increases their risk still more—and that risk only grows as they advance. The more proficient the athlete becomes, the more likely he or she is to be singled out for additional one-on-one time with coaches and other adults, a key component in the grooming process. There is reason to be hopeful, however.

“We’re hearing more and more about people and organizations discussing problem behaviors,” Nichols says. “Victims are also receiving more support than ever before and they are more likely to disclose their experiences, so the prevention strategies are working. It may make it seem like things are getting worse, but we're just defining the problem more broadly. That’s a good thing.”

Good news? But it’s just the start if we’re to create lasting change.

“It doesn't mean we don't have to do as much to protect young athletes,” Nichols says, “it means we need to be doing even more.”

Did you know there are specific rules that need to be followed when individual training is happening?

This is to ensure that safeguarding is being upheld and interactions between adults and minors are observable and interruptible.

Parents and coaches should be aware of the rules outlined in the MAAPP so that they can recognize when those rules are being followed or not. To learn more, read "What is the MAAPP? Know Your Rights and Responsibilities" on our Resources page!

is pleased to welcome our new Communications Manager, Elizabeth Romary, MSc! 🩷

Elizabeth grew up as a dancer and performer, combining the worlds of athletics and the arts. Her advocacy work began at university, leading her to start an organization focused on sexual violence prevention education. She was also a member of the It’s On Us Student Advisory Council in 2016, which gave her the opportunity to meet with other student advocates around the country. She continued this work as a Peace Corps volunteer, integrating lessons on consent and other topics into her classes whenever she could. Elizabeth earned her Master of Science in International Studies with a concentration in Public Health and Development, and used what she learned to develop and facilitate training on trauma-informed care and cultural competency for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Dublin, Ireland. These trainings were given to various organizations that worked with migrant survivors of violence. In 2023, Elizabeth began working as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault and other crimes in Washington, DC, and uses her experiences to inform her prevention education work in her community. She has begun to dabble more in sports by joining a run club and a summer softball league (no strikes, no walks, it’s great!). But she still makes time for the arts by continuing her dancing, painting, and keeping up with her professional opera training! When she’s not on the field, in the studio, or at work, Elizabeth can be found traveling, working in her garden, and hanging out with her two cats.

Did you know you are a mandatory reporter to SafeSport?

That is, if you're an Adult Participant in USOPC sport, like being an adult amateur in equestrian sport or a swim coach.

That means you're REQUIRED to report all known or suspected child abuse and all known or suspected sexual misconduct to both the Center for SafeSport and the relevant law enforcement.

Mandatory reporting can feel complicated. We break it down for you in "What Are My SafeSport Reporting Requirements?" on our Blog. 🩷

Diagrams to help figure out what a healthy coach-athlete relationship looks like, sounds like, and what its characteristics are! 💫

Find all three versions of the C.A.R.D. diagrams on our Resources page, and let us know some examples of what a healthy coach-athlete relationship sounds like to you 🩷
