Recent discourse about Thoroughbred aftercare and the state of the aftercare industry has offered varied ideas, concepts, and solutions, but all takes agree on one point: something needs to be done.

The Retired Racehorse Project's 2026-2030 strategic plan, adopted in December 2025 and publicly available today, proposes innovative solutions to some of the aftercare industry's biggest challenges:
🏇 Supportive programming for anyone working with the breed
🏇 Unification for the aftercare industry through the RRP brand
🏇 Industry-wide accountability and engagement

The RRP’s strategic plan supports the organization’s commitment to building a stronger, more connected aftercare ecosystem that supports the Thoroughbred beyond racing. Learn more about the organization's strategic priorities at https://bit.ly/4r9vZgB

One of our very best fairytale stories is of The Little Sprout. Josie Frickman took him on as a green, rising 4yo with 90 days post track training. After going to the RRP makeover in 2023, they are now successfully competing at training level eventing. They couldn’t be a more adorable pair and we wish them the best of luck for they’re future together!

This is a great initiative to keep track of TB’s after racing to make sure they end up in good / safe situations!

We have two new, sweet boys to welcome to our program. They need some calories before we find out what they’d like to do next, but they’re both good boys and it’s always exciting to see how they’ll progress. Stay tuned for updates!

Just because a horse failed at the race track doesn’t mean the horse may not be a wonderful athlete in some other sport.

King Oscar here could hardly have had a less impressive stint as a race horse. He ran twice in 1987 unplaced at Metrapark, near Billings, Montana, and once more that year, also unplaced at Great Falls, Montana, and was retired from racing having earned a grand total of forty nine dollars.

But here he was nine years later jumping into the Head Of The Lake at Rolex.

The sad reality of this is that right this minute, September 12th, 2025, there are King Oscars banging around race tracks all over the world, and almost none of them will be discovered and have the chance to shine in some other endeavor.

It’s not that those wonderful Thoroughbreds are not out there. The missing link is a system for identifying them in time, before they get hurt or otherwise disposed of. And while many are trying, with all sorts of rehoming strategies, it’s still a needle in the haystack situation to find the talent hidden within. And probably always has been, although years ago there were more USA horse dealers out there searching.
