Just because a horse failed at the race track doesnât mean the horse may not be a wonderful athlete in some other sport.
King Oscar here could hardly have had a less impressive stint as a race horse. He ran twice in 1987 unplaced at Metrapark, near Billings, Montana, and once more that year, also unplaced at Great Falls, Montana, and was retired from racing having earned a grand total of forty nine dollars.
But here he was nine years later jumping into the Head Of The Lake at Rolex.
The sad reality of this is that right this minute, September 12th, 2025, there are King Oscars banging around race tracks all over the world, and almost none of them will be discovered and have the chance to shine in some other endeavor.
Itâs not that those wonderful Thoroughbreds are not out there. The missing link is a system for identifying them in time, before they get hurt or otherwise disposed of. And while many are trying, with all sorts of rehoming strategies, itâs still a needle in the haystack situation to find the talent hidden within. And probably always has been, although years ago there were more USA horse dealers out there searching.
