Please join us for the opening reception of Telluric, an exhibition of new works by Ohio University artist and environmental advocate John Sabraw, at the Kennedy Museum of Art on Friday, August 28, from 5:30–7:00 p.m.

John’s work explores the relationship between art, nature, and environmental restoration—and many of the works in Telluric incorporate iron oxide pigments produced from acid mine drainage through True Pigments. As a co-founder and longtime collaborator on the project, John helped bring together art, science, and environmental innovation to transform pollution from abandoned coal mines into a valuable, sustainably sourced material. The exhibition will remain on view through December 4 for anyone unable to attend the opening reception.

Curious about innovative techniques? See how a coffee roaster is being used to enhance the flavor of chestnut and acorn products for baked goods, beverages, and even dairy applications.

Last week our Sustainable Agriculture team visited Laurel Valley Creamery in Gallia County, where the Nolan family raises Jersey cows on grass and crafts milk into farmstead cheese right there on the farm.

Up next: September 11 at 1pm at Krusling Farm in Athens County for a silvopasture tour. The Krusling family raises 500 hair sheep and has worked trees into their pasture system. We will walk the area, talk tree protection and planting design, and cover cost share programs through NRCS.

🌱 Rural Action is hiring an Environmental Education Program Manager!

We’re looking for a collaborative, experienced leader to help guide the day-to-day delivery of our environmental education programs and support learning opportunities for students, campers, and communities throughout the region.

The Environmental Education Program Manager will lead program delivery, supervise EE AmeriCorps service volunteers, serve as a primary point of contact for external partners, and help guide lesson planning and program development. The position supports the full range of Rural Action’s existing environmental education programs, including classroom education, summer camps, community programs, and special events.

This is a temporary position of roughly 12 months, with the possibility of extension if additional funding is secured. The position may end as early as Fall 2027.

We had a great time at Sugar Butte Farms learning about their diversified pastured meat operation! Kayla and Eric are raising chickens, eggs, pigs, turkeys and sheep out on pasture where they’re building healthy soils.

We visited the chicken tractors which they move daily to fresh pasture, learned about their Ohio grown non-GMO feed program, and discussed the challenges and opportunities of pastured poultry.

Sugar Butte chickens are fed Ohio grown & milled non-GMO feed and moved on green pasture every day.

Come out for our next farm workshop this Thursday, August 20th at Laurel Valley Creamery to learn about all things small-scale dairy. Register through the link in our bio!

Heavy rains are falling across Appalachian Ohio today. Flooding is not a rare event here; it happens every single year. Rural Action is working with Athens County communities to understand where the water goes and what can be done about it in the future.
