Spray Caps Reminder!!!

Opening fire hydrants without spray caps is illegal, wasteful, and dangerous. Illegally opened hydrants can lower water pressure and endanger lives if there is a fire. Children can also be at risk, because the powerful force of an open hydrant without a spray cap can cause serious injury.

New Yorkers should call NYC 311 to report open hydrants. Hydrants can be opened legally with a City-approved spray cap, obtained by someone 18 or over, free of charge, at local firehouses.

During These Extreme Heat Times Use Spray Caps to Open Hydrants!

If you’d like to cool off with a hydrant, make sure you do it safely and legally, using a spray cap. When hydrants are opened without a spray cap, they can use 1,000 gallons of water per minute (or more), reducing water pressure in the surrounding area, making it harder for the fire department to fight fires when necessary.

You can ask your local firehouse to install a spray cap on a nearby hydrant. To request a spray cap, you must be 18 or older and have a valid ID.
