Our piece brings together Sura Ali (spoken word/rap), Johnathan Moore (Electric cello), and dancers from It’s Showtime NYC! in a live mix of rap, cello, and street dance.

Sura Ali (Netflix/Rhythm & Flow) comes from spoken word and carries that into her music—real stories, direct, no filter. Johnathan Moore flips the cello into something else, using loops and live playing to build sound in the moment. Together, they create a space where music isn’t fixed—it moves, shifts, and responds. The dancers meet that energy head-on. Everything is grounded in groove, control, and feeling, pulling from street styles and letting the music hit the body in real time.

Thank you to everyone who came through to our Jam Session.

Honored gave us foundations of flexN both as a master teacher and sharing his history as a pioneer stemming back to the BCAT TV days of Flex N Brooklyn.

Big thanks to team for giving us this opportunity to create space for street dance crews and to for giving us flex dance music tracks we needed to hear!

Next up: June 11 at Bryant Park!

We thank our foundation partners who help us do what we do:

Howard Gilman Foundation, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Lily Auchincloss Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, Foot Locker Foundation, and The Hyde and Watson Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts.

Just announced! Dj Maximum Smurf has been a music force behind Brooklyn battles for 15 years, including Borderline Session, Off-the-Grid, and TUT Tournament. An all-styles dj, he is also known for his signature FDM (Flex Dance Music) mixes.

“What draws me to flexN music is the cinematic quality and the mixture of reggae, Afro-beat, classical, Hindu, doo w*p, hip hop n rnb - we can mix anything into it. I take music from the 40’s 50’s 60’s and mix it into the FDM. Sometimes that nostalgic feeling ‘sounds’ better with a new mix.”
