Disasters do not affect everyone in the same way. Inequalities based on gender, race, age, and geographic location shape who is most exposed to emergencies, their ability to cope with them, and who is recognized when the time comes to rebuild.

In our upcoming Regional Call, “Girls Are Not Invisible: Climate Crisis, Territory, and Rights,” we will draw on the experiences of communities in Colombia’s Chocó region to discuss how girls and Afro-descendant communities experience and respond to disasters.

Together with Silvana Tenorio, Jekssy Mary Pérea Ramírez, and Mayora Elena Hinestroza, moderated by Mauri Balanta Jaramillo, we will explore territory, education, community care, memory, rights, and the ways communities sustain life when institutional responses fall short.

Because rebuilding means more than restoring infrastructure.

It also means recognizing the voices of those who inhabit these territories, restoring rights, strengthening community bonds, and protecting the memories and cultural practices that make it possible to move forward.

There are realities that exist every day, even when they are too often unheard.

On October 22, AfroResistance is opening a regional space to explore what it truly means to say that girls are not invisible: to recognize their experiences, listen to their voices, understand the barriers they face, and ask what we are doing to ensure they can grow with rights, care, dignity, and real possibilities.

This call is not about speaking about them from a distance. We want to bring together people across territories, experiences, and communities to listen, learn, and build a conversation grounded in the realities that are too often left outside of public attention and decision-making.

Because visibility also means listening. It means paying attention to what gets normalized, what gets postponed, and whose voices are too often pushed away from the center.

We invite you to be part of this regional conversation. Your presence, your experience, and your listening matter too.

Hay realidades que existen todos los días, aunque demasiadas veces no sean escuchadas.

Este 22 de octubre, AfroResistance abre un espacio regional para conversar sobre lo que significa realmente decir que las niñas no son invisibles: reconocer sus experiencias, escuchar sus voces, entender las barreras que enfrentan y preguntarnos qué estamos haciendo para que puedan crecer con derechos, cuidado, dignidad y posibilidades reales.

Esta llamada no busca hablar sobre ellas desde lejos. Queremos reunir personas de distintos territorios, experiencias y comunidades para escuchar, aprender y construir una conversación que parta de lo que muchas veces queda fuera de las agendas y de las decisiones.

Porque hacer visible también significa escuchar. Significa prestar atención a lo que se normaliza, a lo que se deja para después y a las voces que con demasiada frecuencia no ocupan el centro.

El terremoto no solo dejó daños materiales. También volvió a mostrar las desigualdades que atraviesan a Panamá y la forma en que muchas comunidades quedan fuera de las prioridades hasta que ocurre una emergencia.

Mientras las familias enfrentan viviendas afectadas, escuelas dañadas y la pérdida de sus medios de vida, la respuesta no puede limitarse a la solidaridad ciudadana. Esa solidaridad es fundamental, pero debe ir acompañada de una respuesta estatal inmediata, transparente y construida junto a las comunidades.

Reconstruir también significa garantizar derechos, escuchar a quienes están viviendo la emergencia y evitar que los territorios históricamente invisibilizados vuelvan a quedar esperando.

Desde AfroResistencia acompañamos a las comunidades afectadas y hacemos un llamado a seguir apoyando, organizándonos y exigiendo una recuperación que no reproduzca las mismas desigualdades de siempre.

Silvana Tenorio sabe que reconstruir una comunidad va mucho más allá de levantar lo que cayó. También significa acompañar, cuidar, defender derechos y crear oportunidades para quienes históricamente han sido dejades al margen.

Desde Cali, su trabajo comunitario con mujeres, niñas, niños y jóvenes conecta directamente con las preguntas que queremos poner en el centro de Las niñas no son invisibles: Crisis climática, territorio y derechos.

Black Joy Saturday is a free community gathering celebrating the African diaspora through movement, culture, storytelling, creativity, and connection.

Throughout the afternoon, we’ll come together for music, food, open mic, poetry, storytelling, live painting, dancing, and more. As part of the celebration, Oneika Phillips will lead a special Soca class, bringing rhythm, energy, and movement into a space centered on Black joy and community.

Edited by Yndia Lorick-Wilmot and Natasha Gordon-Chipembere, this powerful collection brings together writers of African descent across genres to celebrate Black creativity, identity, self-determination, and liberation.

During this virtual conversation, the editors and contributing writers will reflect on the making of the anthology, share selections from their work, and explore the power of Black storytelling across borders, identities, and languages.

No fue evangelización. Fue imposición.

Hoy 12 de octubre no celebramos un “descubrimiento”. Nombramos siglos de muerte, saqueo, esclavización y destrucción contra pueblos indígenas y afrodescendientes.

Esa violencia sigue viva en el racismo, el despojo y la expulsión de comunidades de sus territorios.

La lucha garífuna es parte de esa memoria y de esa resistencia: defender la tierra, la cultura, la autonomía y el derecho a existir con dignidad.
